what Graham Earnshaw thought about John "It was different with The Deer and the Cauldron. I cut and simplified, while John embellished and changed. There was once a discussion between John and myself at the Hong Kong Translation Society where I had been invited to speak on my translation of B&S. I have a recording of it. Basically, John’s view was that the translator had a responsibility to enhance Cha’s work to make it acceptable for publication in English. I disagreed with this approach. The problem with it is that the reader cannot then know what is Cha and what is John Minford. With my approach, you can at least be sure that everything there is Cha." source: www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2171127/i-translated-chinese-writer-louis-cha-jin-yong-heres-why-he-neverwhat do you think?

What he said is true. The Earnshaw translation used to be floating around the internet 20 years ago. Earnshaw had Jin Yong's permission to disseminate it. Then Oxford University Press heard about it and got John Minford to prepare the translation for publication. I can't be 100% sure but the last time I checked the Earnshaw translation (which was a long time ago), I found it to follow the original quite closely. Earnshaw removed the two subplots if I remember right. Minford did further cuts and The Book and the Sword was issued in one volume. Still, I prefer the Earnshaw translation to the Minford one based on everything I heard. Although a university press, Oxford UP is still out to make money and a five-volume translation would only be possible for world classics like Dream of the Red Chamber. Jin Yong suffers the fate of all long-form novelists; he has been abridged in translation. Like Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo, these classics are only recently issued in complete, unabridged editions. If issued complete, The Deer and the Cauldron will take up five volumes and The Book and the Sword two. Jin Yong did write shorter novels but I'm not sure if they will be translated soon. Fox Volant has already been translated and if successful, some publisher may take up the other Hu Fei title or some shorter works.

The easiest books to translate other than the epic novels are the Young Flying Fox and A Deadly Secret.

A couple of days ago, I read a PhD thesis online that is about Anna Holmwood's role in translating JY. It appears she is not just the translator but also the literary agent for LOCH. It was she who set the regulations and searched out Gigi Chang as co-translators. Also, a "Chinese Lord of the rings" was a tagline invented by her too.
Seems like a very zealous agent in promoting JY to the full.
The thesis writer has first hand info on Holmwood's emails and even interviewed her.

She's not missing, but Gigi Chang is the faster translator. Holmswood also edits what Gigi Chang translates and gives input on how to "speed up" or "speed down" the tempo of the prose. Fourth book she also found Shelly Bryant who is based in Singapore to cotranslate with Gigi and herself.
