jin yong
the most famous writer of wuxia, he wrote 15 novel(not 14!). his popularity comes from the nature of wu and xia, which develops well, as wll as his great knowledge of history. part of his fame come from the fact that he is the publisher of ming bao. jin yong novels is highly valued, and was even the official teaching materials in china. jin yong rewritten all his books with different level of changes.
recommendation: all his books except yue nu jian(the least known of all, and the shortest as well)
gu long
well, gu long novel is usually ranked second after jin yong. his novels are known for his special style of writing, namelt, detective style story line, and the single-movement fighting scene. gu long's downside of novel is that he never emphasis on woman character.
recommendation: xiao li fei dao series, lu xiao feng series, chu liu xiang seris, xiao shi yi lang, jue dai shuang jiao
liang yu sheng
the father of mordern wu xia, liang yu sheng novels feature a lot of historical political events of china. his standard of language is often regard as the highest among all wu xia. however, he sometimes overdoes it, to the extend of which he called himself often showing off his high standard of chinese poems. liang yu sheng have extreme difference from gu long, and he focus on female characters, and respect them a lot. some of his novels have lead characters being female.
recommendation: yun hai yu gong yuan, qi jian xia tian shan, bai fa mo nu zhuan
* personal note: i personally believe that yun hai yu gong yuan has the best ending of all wu xia, and its really so touching that it catches my tears. if you like a zi or hate her of tian long ba bu by jin yong, get a look at this novel.
wen rui an
one of the modern writer, his work is greatly valued after the first 3 authors. a combination of all writing style, he developed his personal new writing style, which sometimes doesnt even fit into chinese context. an example will be, there are 3 guardians of a clan, whose names are : situ can, sima fei, sikong chan fei, which translate to situ lame, sima crippled, sikong handicapped
recommendation: shen zhou qi xia series, 4 constables series
huang yi
a modern writer, his work is also based on very new style. he wrote some extremely long novels.
recommenation: da tang shuang long zhuan, bian huang chuan shuo, fu yu fan yun. all these novels are abt 3-10 times of average novel length
wolongsheng, zhugeqingyun, sima
known as the 3 swordsman of taiwan wuxia, they are forced down to 4 great king of wu xia with the arrival gu long. their novel are those standard type of story line: a man who has very strong martial art skills, then a strong new clan arrived. the man then was so lucky to get some ancient martial art style to maake him stronger. he unite the world of wu lin and defeat the enemies, and throughout the process win multiple hearts of beauty.
there is no suggestion for them, their novels are basically the same.
liuchanyang
liu chan yang novel features a very different wuxia. there is often no right or wrong in his wu xia, and the lead usually alreay have very strong fighting ability at the start. his novels seldom features women, as they are seen as to weak to be in the world of killing and blood. his notion for wu lin is "zhi jian er yi, bu ji sheng si" (one should not care about his life when it comes to belief and justice)
just read any one of his novels will do
chenqingyun
one of the special writer, whose style doesnt follows notion of wuxia. chen qing yun is often associated oppositely with wo long sheng, as their novels contradict in great aspect. his novel is full of hatred and distrust, and often because the lead character is lack of a mother, or have a disrespectable mother. basically, nearly all of his novels fall into this:
the lead, a young guy usually about late teens, from a greatly well known wu lin family, have his entire family being wiped off by strangers, which usually developed into because of his mother. thus he developed a hatred in women. then he seek for revenge by always falling into cliffs or somewhere dangerous and found some ancient martial art book, and some hundreds years of power given to him just by transfering of power by previous great martial artist. he then would met the first person, usually in a girl whom father is one of the strongest man on earth, who disguised as a man, and treated her as a brother. he usually is unaware to the extend that every reader will know that the person is a girl. anyway, he would then realise that his enemies are from a strong underground clan, and he finally defeats them, in the process revealing his personal story, which all readers should know by now. after that the ending split: either he livd happily with the girl, an usually a few girls i mean, or he realised he commited a fatal error of misunderstanding his parents and commited suicide.
recommendation: all his novels falls into the same category with same plot. reading one means you have read all.
