Finished reading 'Bi Xue Jian'. I know why many like Ah Jiu. She is a much nicer girl than Miss Vinegar. But still, she's quite a minor character. It's amazing how so many adaptions make her seem like second lead female. I guess people are touched by her ending part and feel sad for her. Great material for second lead. As for Miss Vinegar. She's smart till the end. I like how she tricked her grandfathers to bring her to Hua Shan. But, she nearly died in her father's hand. If Yuan Chengzi didn't save her in time, Xia Xueyi will be cussing himself in hell. Xia Xueyi is so smart. He's the second character in Jin Yong novel that can plan for events far beyond his death. I wonder how will Qingqing turn out if her father didn't die and she grew up under his tutelage. Based on this second edition, if want to choose a second lead female, I will choose Jiao Wan-er. She's the girl with the second most screentime after Qingqing.

Is Yang Buihui very smart and sassy? The version of HSDS I watch all failed to show this? WQQ is already smart and sassy now. I guess if her father survives, she would be less insecure and thus more like young Huang Rong. She would also be one of the top pugilist in wulin if her father teach her all his martial art skills. Btw, watching 'Sword Stained with Royal Blood 1985'. I'm disappointed that this series too made Ah 9 the true love of Yuan Chengzhi. Why all series do this?

probably because ALL the girls HAVE to love the hero?
my impression of YBH is that she's no shrinking violet: (1) she grew up among men considered "evil"; (2) she dared love a man her father disapproved of; (3) she told her father off for daring to disapprove her choice, when he was the one who wronged her man to begin with. i wouldn't say that YBH is as vivacious as HR or as bossy as WQQ, but i don't think she's the retiring type either.

probably because ALL the girls HAVE to love the hero? That's not the point. Even in the book (2nd edition), Ah 9 loves Yuan Chengzhi. But, YCZ's true love is WQQ. He has a bit of feelings for Ah 9 during their close proximity under the bed, but, he loves WQQ the most and he knows it himself. Maybe future adaptation will have YCZ loves Ah 9 the most since Jin Yong change the 3rd edition to be so. But, Crimson Sabre (2000) and SSWRB 85 was made before 3rd edition and they still made YCZ's true love to be Ah 9. In SSWRB 85, YCZ told Ah 9 he only saw WQQ as a little brother. Maybe it's more romantic to have the Romeo and Juliet situation, so, all adaptations made YCZ loves Ah 9.

In, Sword Stained with Royal Blood 85, my favourite person in Bi Xue Jian is Li Yan. His love for Qing Qing, his loyalty for Li Zicheng and his love for the country/people is so touching. But, if the series follow the book, he will not have a good end. Li Zicheng is a greatly disappointing king and his suspicion of Li Yan just wasted Li Yan's loyalty. Lawrence Ng portrayed Li Yan very well. His gentle way of speaking (especially when he's with Qing Qing) give a gentleness to General Li Yan that is quite appealing.
This is a person who is willing give everything those he cares for without thinking of any return.
