yenchin definitely nothing folksy about the themesong! if i wasn't following the lyrics, i wouldn't know what he was singing! there are some words pronounced the same as mandarin, but mostly not. hokkien is really different in pronunciation from cantonese. neighbouring provinces, but complete failure of communication if verbal.

yenchin thanks for the Hokkien song. Listening to Hokkien songs always reminds me of my grandpa and father. The language is very familiar for me although I could only pronounce less than 20 words of Hokkien, can't even pronounce my name correctly in it You're welcome!
You can try this link here, though as the explanation goes, it might not be accurate. Is your name the same as the one I saw on MSN (or FB?)? If true I think the third character has a couple of different pronunciations. Additionally, since this is a Taiwanese Hokkien website, the accent might also be different.

ok, reinafu , this is my poor attempt to translate the lyrics: 我最親愛的 "My Dearest One" 作詞:林夕 lyrics: Albert Leung 作曲:Russell Harris (composer) 製作:JimLee、張惠妹 (producers) 很想知道你近況 我聽人説還不如你對我講 Really want to know how you've been; I've heard from others but why don't you tell me yourself 經過那段遺憾 請你放心 我變得更加堅強 After that period of regret, please don't worry, I've become stronger 世界不管怎樣荒涼 愛過你就不怕孤單 No matter life's desolations, I don't fear loneliness after having loved you 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像過去一樣 Here's a kiss, as I used to give 我想你一定喜歡 現在的我學會了你最愛的開朗 You'll be happy to know that the me of today has become as cheerful as you hoped 想起你的模樣 有什麼錯 還不能夠被原諒 Thinking of your paradigm that no wrong is too impossible to forgive 世界不管怎樣荒涼 愛過你就不怕孤單 No matter life's desolations, I don't fear loneliness after having loved you 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像朋友一樣 Here's a kiss, as a friend would give 雖然離開了你的時間 比一起還漫長 我們總能補償 Although our time apart has exceeded our time together, we can make up for it 因為中間空白的時光 如果還能分享 也是一種浪漫 We can share in this common space-time, deem it a sort of romance 關係雖然不再一樣 關心卻怎麼能說斷就斷 Our relationship may not be the same, but the caring doesn't just end 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像親人一樣 Here's a kiss, as a loved one might give Thank you very much ! A beautiful song, indeed !

Dragon Lady from the Sea of Bitterness Here's another gem from the puppet shows that has been covered by singers again and again. The style is more traditional as the music was borrowed from Japanese Enka, and the lyrics like the old school Taiwanese Hokkien songs are usually full of hardships, loneliness, sadness, wine, coffee....etc ("Jianghu Style", 江湖味) In the puppet shows, key characters usually have their own themes when they show up. Back in the old days these themes were usually borrowed from various soundtracks (such as "A Fistful of Dollars") or Taiwanese pop songs. This song was more original as the lyrics were written by the leading puppeteer himself and sung by his wife. It was the main theme for the character of the same name (who as also the main character's wife in the series ) 苦海女神龍 作詞:黃俊雄,作曲:猪俣公章 (original song: 港町ブルース) 無情的太陽,可恨的沙漠, 迫阮滿身的汗流甲濕糊糊。 Some other versions: Chiu Lan Fen 邱蘭芬 Li Yu Chun (李翊君) Jody Chiang (江蕙) Theresa Teng showing that she can sing in Hokkien And Mandarin And Indonesian And Japanese The original singer should be proud of himself, though I see that there are already tons of Japanese singers covering this song on youtube

siuyiu caiyi : so because your mother tongue is in Cantonese, do you guys also read Chinese characters in Cantonese pronunciation? I notice that for minnan-hua (Fujian dialect), sometimes the choices of words is different between Mandarin (putonghua) and Minnan-hua. I wonder if that's the case too for Cantonese. Please enlightened me to know how homographs work. Thank you! yes, when i actually know how to pronounce the word. and yes, choice of vocabulary in canto sometimes differs from mando. for example, greeting someone in mando, you'd say, "ni hao". canto speakers not from hong kong (who would say "hallo" after the british influence) generally say, "sik zoh faan mei" (have you eaten"). Same here for me. If I know the words, they definitely come out in Cantonese. The syntax in Cantonese is not always the same as in Putong Hua/Mandarin. Sometimes I need to slow down my Putong Hua/Mandarin speech for my mind to catch up translating my Cantonese into Putong Hua/Mandarin in the proper syntax. I usually think in Mandarin when I speak. but when my Mandarin vocabulary is inadequate, I need to do a quick mental search in Cantonese a suitable substitute and render that into Mandarin. I hope this makes sense.

Since it even have Malay version and majority of Teresa Deng Mandarins song have Cantonese version ,do this song have, not that i'm aware. i tried searching on youtube but haven't found anything. Nothing here either. Teresa sang both the Mandarin and Japanese version in her first Hong Kong concert. So probably there isn't a Cantonese version.

Well, my mother tongue is Cantonese. So everything sounds more beautiful in Cantonese, except maybe some names. Ah Ke is certainly nicer sounding than Ah Oh. I most probably will miss all the puns if I read the novel. But, the rendition of the song also affect my feelings. This version sounds a lot better. siuyiu caiyi : so because your mother tongue is in Cantonese, do you guys also read Chinese characters in Cantonese pronunciation? But, I'm mostly self taught. So, I taught myself to read in Cantonese.

was in the mood to try and translate these lyrics. while the metaphor of a woman as a flower is cliche, the lyrics do speak to some truths about hope and loss and life.
女人花 Woman Blossom 作詞:李安修 lyrics: preston lee 作曲:陳耀川 melody: yiu-chuen chen
我有花一朵種在我心中含苞待放意幽幽 i have a blossom planted in my heart, with quietly budding thoughts 朝朝與暮暮我切切地等候有心的人來入夢 day after day i await the one to share in my dreams
女人花搖曳在紅塵中女人花隨風輕輕擺動 the woman blossom staggering through life, the woman blossom swaying in the wind 只盼望有一雙溫柔手能撫慰我內心的寂寞 yearning for that gentle hand to soothe my lonely heart
我有花一朵花香滿枝頭誰來真心尋芳踪 i have a blossom, fragrance abound, is anyone sincerely searching for it 花開不多時啊堪折直須折女人如花花似夢 the flowering season is brief, (it's) ready for the plucking; woman as a flower, flower as a dream
我有花一朵長在我心中真情真愛無人懂 i have a blossom growing in my heart, no one understands its passions 遍地的野草已佔滿了山坡孤芳自賞最心痛 the weeds have overtaken the hillside, it's heartbreaking (to see) the self-respecting, solitary blossom
女人花搖曳在紅塵中女人花隨風輕輕擺動 the woman blossom staggering through life, the woman blossom swaying in the wind 只盼望有一雙溫柔手能撫慰我內心的寂寞 yearning for that gentle hand to soothe my lonely heart
女人花搖曳在紅塵中女人花隨風輕輕擺動 the woman blossom staggering through life, the woman blossom swaying in the wind 若是你聞過了花香濃別問我花兒是為誰紅 if you've smelled its fragrance, you need not ask for whom it blooms
愛過知情重醉過知酒濃花開花謝終是空 having loved, one understands love's importance; having been drunk, one knows wine's intoxication; a flower blooming and withering, nothing remains 緣份不停留像春風來又走女人如花花似夢 fate doesn't pause just as the spring wind comes and goes; woman as a flower, flower as a dream

@caiyi the only canto version of the lyrics--sadly, LDY is completely miscast in this adaptation.
