Ok, I watched Shaws' Heroes shed no tears a few days ago and it helped me to better understand what I saw in the series, though the ending of the series isn't the same as the ending of the movie. It looks like the series has been stopped without trying to give a satisfying ending.
The characters of the series (and the same characters in the Shaws' movie) :
Ha Yu plays Pai Piao's role Sima Chaoqun
Lau Dan plays Derek Yee's Zhuo Tonglai
Mary Hon Ma Li plays Angie Chiu's Die Wu (Butterfly in the series)
Maggie Li Lin Lin plays Sima Chaoqun's wife
Stanley Fung plays Yueh Hua's Xiao Leixue
Wong Shu Tong plays Fu Sheng's Gao Jianfei
Carter Wong plays Ku Feng's Zhu Meng
The story of the series begins with Chen Hui Min and a few friends of his in the forest and being attacked by a group of men, and only Chen Hui Min and one guy are still alive, if I remember well.
Later, they are once again attacked and of course, since Chen Hui Min is a great fighter, using a lance, he wins.
Ha Yu is the chief of an escort company and, to the contrary of the Shaws' movie, he seems to work for a rich guy, Lau Dan (while in the movie, it's Derek Yee who works under Pai Piao's orders, even if he is the one who plots the whole story behind Pai Piao's back), and his wife doesn't agree with this, because she suspects Lau Dan to be a bad guy, but Ha Yu tells her that they are friends and he believes all that Lau Dan says.
Thanks to a stratagem, this latter succeeds in making Ha Yu to fight against Chen Hui Min, and, using a secret hidden in his sword, Ha Yu kills Chen Hui Min.
Later, a kind of banquet is organized for Ha Yu (according to the Shaws' movie, it was a banquet destined to celebrate Pai Piao's supremacy over all the escort companies of the town), where a lot of fighters are invited.
Among the fighters, there is Wong Shu Tong, who arrives in town with a sword hidden in a piece of cloth, and he notices that one the fighters seems to be protected by Lau Dan's men. Then, there is a fight and, following the fighters in order to see what happens, he sees Stanley Fung killing the protected fighter, using a wooden box full of secret weapons, and he decides to follow him.
Stanley Fung drugs him with one of the secret weapons and he awakes in Stanley Fung's cave. They have a discussion, and then, Wong Shu Tong is drugged again and he awakes in his room in the inn and discovers that Stanley Fung has given him a wooden box with a lot of jewels in it.
Meanwhile, Lau Dan makes Ha Yu believe that the chief of another company (Carter Wong) is against him and he plots to get rid of him, using a dancer (Hon Ma Li) to seduce him. Carter Wong is absolutely charmed by Hon Ma Li, but this latter has met Wong Shu Tong and they are attracted to each other.
While Carter Wong is out, his main lieutenant (in the movie, he is played by Goo Goon Chung) has betrayed him and helps Lau Dan's men to completely destroy the escort company.
Carter Wong is devastated and when he fights the bad guys and is about to be killed, he is saved by Wong Shu Tong and they become friends.
After some other twists in the plot, Ha Yu finally discovers that his wife was right and that Lau Dan has plotted the whole thing in order to oppose him to Carter Wong, and when he goes to the duel with Carter Wong, he doesn't want to kill him and he returns at home, where he has a great explanation with Lau Dan, who finally allows him to leave with his wife and his servant.
At the end of the series, we see Lau Dan looking at Ha Yu, his wife and the servant going away and we hear him thinking of something regarding Ha Yu, but well, I'll never know what it is and if it was a kind of possibility for TVB to release a sequel with a more complete story.
Ha Yu was very young in this series, and he has great fights, especially the one against Chen Hui Min.
Carter Wong's and Wong Shu Tong's fights are also very good, and it's too bad that the series didn't last for more episodes.
Also, while in the movie Yue Hua has an important role, Stanley Fung's role in the series isn't developped at all and he appears only in 2 or 3 scenes, which is very frustrating.
I still have to watch the 1984 series with Miu Kiu Wai and see what are the differences between the 2 series and the movie...
