i have to admit, despite preferring the old school style of MA fighting (in tv series way back when), the matrix-esque CG format does lend itself well to GL's surrealist storytelling. dunno that i'd watch this movie in its entirety, SSYDJ not being among my top 5. i'd love to hear reviews from others, though.

Unfortunately it's not out in Taiwan until January. I'm curious though since you seem to not like SSYDJ as much, why was it the one you recommended for newcomers to read? Just because it's representative of his style?

kellychen the atv serial is based on the book by GL and so is this movie. but not having seen the movie, i can't say whether it is an adaptation of the book directly or an adaptation of the atv serial; i suspect the former. and i have no idea if norman tsui is in this movie. i also have no idea if there will be a canto-dub for the movie.

I just watched this film last night. Yes, Norman Tsui was in the film, he took the role of the Third Master's father. I have not read the book, so I cannot tell if it adhered faithfully to the book or not. The starting scene was interesting, but it was mainly CGI. I did not like the CGI. Based on the end credits, I would guess the CGI was done in South Korea. Overall, the story was not too fast, nor too slow. What I liked about this version is that it featured more backstory of the characters than the old Shaw Brother's version starring Derek Yee (Er Dong Sheng 尔冬升 - think that's his Chinese name). And this film was directed by Derek Yee. This version had a bigger role for Yan #13 (Yan ShiSan 燕十三) which I thought was a good balance for the Third Master. Yan #13 was played by Peter Ho. I imagined Yan #13 to be a much older person. All in all, it was entertaining.

watched this by chance. as chefying says, too much CGI. it's been a while since i've read the books, so i'm in no position to break it down, but from what i remember of the overall, the theme is essentially correct as is the general storyline. however, the ending has changed as has the message about the point of the overall story arc and character development. i liked that they made murong qiudi less evil bitchy--GL always had an overdeveloped misogynistic streak, so i'm glad the filmmakers chose not to alienate the female audience. it was a pretty film, it was fairly entertaining. it was also rather emotionally bereft and pointless.

Interestingly, it was specifically stated in the intro of the movie that it is based on 'Death Duel', the 1977 movie adaptation of the novel. Interesting that the movie said it was based on a previous adaptation instead of the novel itself.

Just finish watching the movie yesterday. My feeling of the movie is up and down. It started out interesting, then it got boring in the middle and back to being interesting near the end (after XXF and YSS started becoming acquainted). I find Murong Qiudi the most annoying character in the movie, followed her manservant (after he went bonkers at the end). They are made for each other. Too bad MRQD has her heart set on Xie Xiao Feng. She's all about me me me, lamenting how XXF wronged her and how she has tolerated his whims but it's still not enough for him. Uh, XXF never force her to follow his way. She's the one who said she would, but, couldn't stand being a commoner. It's ok to want power, to want to be the top of wulin, more power to her, but don't lament in self-pity when XXF don't have the same ambition. Xiao Li was right when she said MRQD only loves XXF's status and not XXF the person.

Interesting that the movie said it was based on a previous adaptation instead of the novel itself. This might be the first time they adapted an adaptation as opposed to adapted from the novel.

Admin without checking the book and basing solely on my spotty memory, i nonetheless will say "no, this look is purely the moviemakers' design". i think i would've remembered if GL gave Y13 such an odd appearance. GL tended to make their personalities weird, not their looks. the most distinguishing aspect of Y13 was his superb sword technique.
