once again, tried to salvage from the old WM and WSv1 forums. list by adaptation rather than individual member (though credits given!). please continue the discussion!
legend of lu xiaofeng 1976, 1977, 1979 (TVB)
- 1977: the double for ye gucheng is not tang tianzhong (sp??)
- 1977: ye gucheng's involvement in the usurping of the throne had nothing to do with him wanting to be emperor
- as far as i can tell, mrs. ximen doesn't commit suicide nor does she give birth to a child without hands
- lu xiaofeng never proved that he could catch ximen's sword
- 1979: the villain of ghost mansion (or whatever it's called) is different *SPOILER it's daoist mu in the novel, and daoist jade in the series
- 1979: ye xue does not die that way
the romantic swordsman 1978-9 (TVB)
- lin xin'e does not show her face to li xuanhuan when they first meet, although this change is obviously necessary
- while it's not explicit in the novel, i really doubt li xunhuan would use such a fussy way to kill shangguan jinhung
One Sword 1979 (TVB)
- the story follows Gu Long's Huan Hua Xi Jian Lu but in the middle of series, TVB decided to follow Jin Yong's Xiao Ao Jiang Hu, so the series is a mixed bag with loopholes, the main hero was shockingly played by Feng Baobao (Cantonese : Fung Bobo), an actress, acting as a man
The New Adventure of Chor Lau Heung 1986 (TVB)
- the bat is blind, and simon yam was definitely not
- the barbara yung character was an unnecessary creation of tvb
- yi dianhung is supposed to be crippled, and he's not
The Return of Luk Siu Fung 1986 (TVB)
- Suet Bing dies because of the weaving killer in one of the novels. In this adaption Suet Bing gets to fight him many times and even survives until the very end and likes an old man later on.
1. Xue Bing is wearing pink all the time. In the novel, she wears white, and especially when Lu visits her she's supposed to be wearing white.
2. This Xue Bing doesn't bite at all. In the novel she would always bite Lu all the time when she gets mad at him. (It's a habit the sisters in the Red Shoe Committee tend to do)
3. Lu's first visit to Divine Needle Xue, he should meet with two of their maids and fight with them first, in this adaption he does meet A maid first but she doesn't know any martial arts.
4. Granda Xue is supposed to look young despite being old but this actress is an old lady alright. She also fakes her death once in this adaption to get Lu and Xue Bing together, this doesn't happen in the novel. In fact in the novel the only time Granda Xue is in it is the beginning chapter. This Grandma Xue appears too much, and she also gets killed by the Fragrance Swordsman in the middle.
5. Jiang Qing Xia is not Jin Jiu Ling's lover. It was the second madame in the Red Shoe Committee. In this adaption, it really is Jiang Qing Xia, and Jin Jiu Ling even kills her wile being jailed by Gong Sun Lan.
6. Hua Man Lou appears too many times, he only had one single brief appearance in the novel. In this adaption he even gets to fight Jin Jiu Ling a few times.
7. Gong Sun Lan is supposed to be a stunning beauty, but Chan Kar Lee looks too old although her age does fit the description well since Gong Sun Lan is supposed to be middle aged.
8. Xue Bing is supposed to die in the novel, she got captured very early in the novel and we learn she was killed by Jin Jiu Ling at the very end. This Xue Bing gets to live all the way until the very very end of the serial, and gets to fight with Jin Jiu Ling a few times too.
9. Jun Jun is a made up character by TVB. She wasn't in the novel, and she definitely not the lead actress in this part of the serial. She kind of outshined Xue Bing, but Xue Bing is supposed to be the lead actress in this segment.
10. Gong Sun Lan is not under the control from the sect from the west. She runs her own sect
11. Jin Jiu Ling is not killed by The Fragrance Swordman, he's supposed to have a duel with Lu and we learn that he is indeed very powerful but he is really weak in this adaption and his fight with Lu was limited to a couple of seconds.
Bian Cheng Lang Zi - The Black Sabre 1988 (TVB)
From what I've known, Ding Bai Yun does not die in the original story. The poison she takes, her brother exchanged it in the novel. Not only she doesn't die, but Ma Fong Qun does not die in the novel also. I think it was his long lost son that saved him. The ending in the novel of BCLZ doesn't state what happens to Ma Fong Ling, but in the serie she has a happy ending with Ding Ling Jia (although the serie had a more complete ending for her, so me not complaining here). Ding Ling Lin seemed cute in the novel. But in the serie they made her tooo cute, too talkative, and too annoying at times (especially the bells although that is a cute idea). I'm a fan of Margie but me not going to be biased or anything. She looked really pretty in the serial, had such a wide wardrobe. They didn't ever mention her having so many outfits in the novel and sooo many different colours too.
The New Romantic Swordsman 1995 (TVB)
- Lin Xian Er does not learn some super evil martial arts that make her go insane and become the evil clan leader like in this adaption.
- Ah Fei's arm does not get cut off in the novel, and Lin Xian Er does not kill him.
- Sun Siu Hong does not come from some secret Island, and hundreds years old. Where did they get this idea from?
The New Chor Lau Heung 2001 (Taiwan)
- didn't finish watching this horror, but i remember the sword god and his crazy brother don't have a younger sister
- The character Si Hong Sing Yee/Si Kong Xing Er (play by Ruby Lin) did not exist in the novel. Totally made up.
- Su Yung Yung was not a spitfire, and so unreasonable as made to be in the serie.
- Sung Xai Wu, I don't remember reading this name anywhere in the novels but she takes some background from one of the charcters. I guess her name was just changed? But did she really have two brothers?
- Wu Tit Fa did not die in any of the original stories. Why did he die of some lousy poison in this serial? Thats total nonsense.
- Li Cam Foon was in the beginning part.. I don't remember reading his name anywhere in the novel.. Did I miss something? And his marial arts is related to the Chor family somehow? Huh? Also, having casting Su Yung Yung as his disciple because he helped her.. Really now...
-Xi Kong Zhai Xing is not a character from the CLX novels. But instead, he's from the Lu Xiao Feng series. He's also not a silly buffoon like he's potrayed in the LCH2001 series. He's also a cool accentric thief that is very good in disguise so that no one really knows what he looks like.
- Su Rong Rong is the one good in medicine and disguise. Sung Tian Er is only good at cooking.
- Zhong Yuan Yi Dian Hong's name was changed to Xue Chang Kong in the series.
- The secret organization , Tian Jun from the series, is actually from Third Master Sword ( Xie Xiaofeng story)
- The 14 and 15 sword from the series also comes from Third Master Sword, use by Yan 13
- The first 5 eps with Li Xun Huan, Song Xiao Hu, Xue Yi Ren was madeup. Was not actually in the novel at all. In fact Li Xun Huan doesn't appear in Chu Liu Xiang novels, I don't believe he was even born yet.
- Li Hong Xiu, and Song Tian Er were Chu Liu Xiang's maids in the novel, and believed to have raised them. In this adaption Song Xiao Hu raised them and taught them all their skills, and gave them to Chu when she passed away.
- Tian Feng Shi Si Lang is now Tu Gu Yi Lang. Although the name is different, but its pretty much the same character. But there is absolutely no info about his wife. In the novel his wife was Li Qi, but instead he has a daughter in this adaption Song Xiao Hu. Maybe they decided to replace the mother role with the daughter role instead? He didn't have a daughter in the novel however, nnly two sons.
- Monk Wu Hua in the novel is now Monk Wu Chen.
- Zhong Yuan Yi Dian Hong is now Xue Chang Kong. He's supposed to fall for Qiu Ling Su in the novel, but since there is no Qiu Ling Su in this adaption he falls in love with Li Hong Xiu instead, and he died. He only lost an arm in the novel.
- Gong Nan Yan is now Feng Nan Yin.
- Nan Gong Ling is now Lu Wu Qing.
- Su Rong Rong is not fierce in the novel, and she is not Si Kong Zai Xun's foster daughter. In fact she doesn't have a father in the novel, she is also Chu's maid/follower. She has a grand mother in the Holy Water Palace, she doesn't in this adaption.
- Si Kong Xing Er is a madeup character. She was not in the novel at all.
- Si Kong Zai Xun is not in any of Chu's novels, he is a character in Lu Xiao Feng's novels.
- There is no Sky Web sect in the novel, in fact that idea was stolen from Gulong's other novel Meteor, Butterfly and Sword.
- Xue Yi Ren does not fall for Si Kong Xing Er because there was no Si King Xing Er in the novel. Not only that but he shouldn't appear in this segment of the novel yet.
- Yin Ji does not develop lesbian affair with Gong Nan Yan (Feng Nan Yin) unlike in the novel. She only treats Feng Nan Yin as her own daughter in this adaption, and even leaves the whole Water Palace under her care after she dies. Moreoever, her lover is the leader of Sky Web clan (whom is Xue Yu Ren, which is strange because Xue Yu Ren should not appear in this part of the novel yet either).
- The series does somewhat follow the first novel of Chu Liu Xiang's novels, but lots of characters were eliminated or missing (i.e. Qiu Ling Su, Princess Pipa, The Stone Avalokitesvara, etc.)
Xiao Shi Yi Lang 2001 (China)
1. X11L doesn't wear rocker costume Razz
2. X11L doesn't smile and flirty all the time
3. No such thing as Shen Bi Jun's Grandma became a vampire Shocked
4. Shen Bijun did not end up with X11L at the end (in the novel GL left us with an open ending end)
