the one thing i didn't like about learning chinese history (or any other history) in school was that it was taught in isolation--only chinese history from one dynasty to the next, without giving a broader context and bigger picture of what was going on in the rest of the world. and while china wasn't always in touch with other countries, trade did occur and they have new evidence that a pre-silk route existed in the Qin dynasty, so european contact via the middle east began much earlier than the Han.
so, this little project is my attempt at tying in chinese history with the rest of the planet. i would love this to be a collaborative effort because i'm definitely not a historian, so there's too much i don't know. i'm going to divide the following posts into groupings by dynasty. i know that dates won't always match up in terms of other countries' histories, but we have to set up a framework somehow! as this is constantly on-going, most of the posts will be WIPs until we can help supply the info.
(i'm not going to delve into the politics between mainland china vs taiwan, so please do not bring up those discussions here.)
please note that i'm using the more "PC" terms for dating the periods:
BCE = before common era (formerly known as BC) CE = common era (formerly known as AD)
my major source of info, for good or evil, is wikipedia, though i'm trying to find other, more reliable book references as well.
