妯娌 is also used in the same manner in Mandarin, while the similar term "連襟" is used in Mandarin for the husbands of two sisters yay! thanks for clarifying!

家爺仔乸 Family Relationsso, in this post in the Chinese 101 thread, i gave visuals on who to call what in terms of family members. below are the visuals for the same but in cantonese. for the most part, the terms are the same. the most notable differences are how to call your father's mother, your father's brothers' wives, and your mother's brothers' wives. (when i have a bit of time, i will do transliterations) in trying to learn a bit more about family relations, i also came across two very specific terms that i don't believe have equivalents in mandarin (though i could be wrong!): 妯娌 ("zook lay") - how the wives of two brothers refer to themselves as a unit襟兄弟 ("kum hing dye") - how the husbands of two sisters refer to themselves as a unit @suiyiu Kum Hing Dye -Also how Husband Refer To Wife Previous Husband Beside Chin Fu. If Your Mother Is The First Wife ,Your Refer Your Father 2nd,3rd,...to Latest Wife As Yee Ma,Sam Ma,...Sai Ma.According to Number. Tai Jie,Yee Jie,Yee Mui Also Used To Refer Your Husband Following Wife. If Your Mother Is Not The First Wife,You Refer Your Father First Wife As Da Ma. If Your Mother have Remarried , You Refer Her Husband As Hou Fu. If Your Father have Remarried ,You Refer His Wife As Hou Mo. If Your Mother Have Boyfriend ,You Refer Her Boyfriend As Kar Kar Loo. If Your Father Have Girlfriend,You Refer His Girlfriend As Kar Kar Poo.

If so, I understand these terms are a bit more on the derogatory side.

@galvatron chefying those terms are beyond derogatory--they're absolutely insulting and slanderous! @galvatron do not use such terms to refer to anyone! where on earth did you pick up such vulgar terms?! stick to "男朋友 nam pung yau (boyfriend)" and "女朋友 nui pung yau (girlfriend)".

i've mentioned before in the Chinese 101 thread that verb conjugations don't exist in chinese, but obviously, there are ways to distinguish between past, present, and future tenses! chinese tends to use helper "time" words and phrases to denote tense, rather than changing the form of the verb itself to indicate tense. so, the following two videos are good introductions to how past and future tenses are denoted in canto. if anyone needs a link, here's my post on basic chinese grammar.

Chinese Poetry: Mandarin vs Cantonesebecause they're fairly certain that the dialect spoken in the tang and song dynasty eras contain the tonal variants still in existence in canto and hokkien, it's always been argued that the poetry from these eras need to be spoken in those dialects to get a better sense of the rhythm and rhyme scheme (and let's be honest, the cantos think canto is the only proper way to recite the poems!). so, i'm going to put side-by-side comparisons of some famous poems and you will be able to hear the differences. i don't know hokkien, so i'll leave it to yenchin and/or others to elaborate! (please note that my options, esp for the canto videos, are limited, so please don't mind if they are cutesy or contain long-winded explanations.) the most famous chinese poem ever has got to be li bo's "thoughts on a silent night" 《靜夜思》李白 床前明月光, 疑是地上霜。 舉頭望明月, 低頭思故鄉。 mandarin version cantonese version 《遊子吟》 孟郊 慈母手中線, 遊子身上衣; 臨行密密縫, 意恐遲遲歸。 誰言寸草心, 報得三春暉。 mandarin version cantonese version 《登鸛雀樓》 王之渙 白日依山盡, 黃河入海流。 欲窮千里目, 更上一層樓。 mandarin cantonese version
