i'll start! i confess that i rarely watched the "modern" tv series made by RTV/ATV and TVB, but one that comes to mind is 啼笑因緣 Laugh in the Sleeve, which starred michelle yim and damian lau (surprise, surprise that i chose this!). the production is a re-make of a cantonese opera. TVB also did a re-make earlier, The Fatal Irony, starring lee see kei and chan chun wah. the basic story is about a pair of star-crossed lovers--she's a poor girl who goes about singing in various establishments to earn money; he's a rich boy. his family refuses to let him marry her, and she is forced into marriage to one of the warlords. as an added plot twist, there's a love triangle--there's a rich girl, also played by michelle yim, who's in love with the rich boy, but this is one-sided. this is post-qing, pre-republic of china era, during what's known as the warlords period. it's not a happy ending.
i remember michelle and damian sang the themesong as well. they are way better actors.

Who's the Winner Who's the Winner II Both starring Chan Ting Wai, by ATV I've only watched a couple episodes of III and didn't quite like it. I was hyped up for Who's the Hero but lost interest in waiting. another gambling production. i think, ever since chow yun fat's movie 賭神 came out, a lot of producers wanted to capitalize on the popularity. would you say the series is better than the movie? siuyiuThis serial was no 1 hit in ATV, to counter it TVB have produce other gambling serial The Stake start by Roger Kwok which failed miserably,TVB original want to hire Stephen Chow for the serial but Stephen Price was too high because he already a top movie star so maybe he refuse to start on it even he still a TVB actor,he was feature in TVB calender until 1994 . ATV last drama was also a gambling serial Whose A Hero start buy Julian Cheung with the same Chinese title with Chan Ting Wai one . The part 3 was start by Simon Yam and it was not a good drama. Same as when Chow Yun Fat TVB drama Shanghai Bund come out ,a lot of producer in TVB want to capitalize on the Shanghai triad popularity by produce some Shanghai Triad theme similar to Chow one in 1980an.

@galvatron thanks for the info--it's rare that ATV can outdo TVB on anything! and no worries about the wrong button! TVB also made a another gaming serial start by Eddie Kwan to counter the All For THe Winner 3 in 1993, some say TVB win this time . siuyiu ATV done better In Justice Pao even TVB hire Ti Lung to play Justice Pao in 1995. ATV one have feature some of the Taiwan popular actor. Stephen Chow could have extend his TVB contact around 1989 before his movie All For The Winner released or made, he only main lead role in TVB was Final Combat and Back To The Beyond, mostly his role in TVB was supporting role, maybe he don't know he become popular after the gambling movie,he start feature in TVB calender in 1990,TVB calender those day only feature popular TVB actor during that time unlike now.

well, tvb ought to be satisfied now: they've got a monopoly on the HK market, being the only production company left! though i think the mainland productions are really showing them up in terms of scale and the sheer numbers they can get for big scenes, esp battle scenes!

The opening narration of the series mentions that "There are five schools of gambling: God, Saint, Knight, Overlord, King" in a serious matter, but it's hilarious because its basically listing the titles of the God of Gamblers series besides "King". After that there is no reference about these schools again as most of the characters are "Kings" of gambling. (In III Simon Yam's character trains to be the 'Demon' of Gamblers and it is mentioned that this is a heretic school or something like that.)
The first two series starring Chan Ting Wai had a lot of depth compared to God of Gamblers. The first series is like an epic "rags to riches" story. The second series is more complex as characters become evil, as well as a lot of discussion on winning. Chan's character wins like 99% of the gambles in both series, but he's not ambitious. However, he suffers a lot due to the actions of the other power hungry characters, who are ambitious but eventually lose everything, even their lives. My favorite paradox in this series is that people suffer due to gambling, yet to solve their problems, they have to gamble more.
Also Chan Pui does a great job in both series. He's the big bad in I, and in II he becomes a crazy, childish old man, and then after he regains his memories he's a deep wise mentor.
