Huang Yaoshi : can't decide between Kenneth Tsang of 83 version or Michael Miu of 2016. Both are awesome

@galvatron_prime hope you don't mind--the topic is more appropriate to be placed in the "general wuxia tv series" forum, so i've moved it there!

I don't know about the more recent ones, but the 1982 Tianlong Babu must have one of the best cast in a JY TV series ever... At least three characters are classics: Shek Sau's Murong Fu, Wong Hang-sau's Ah Zhu and Chan Fuk-sang's Ah Zi. The other actors are all well cast... Idy Chan, Bryan Leung and Kent Tong. Comparing these three characters with the more well-known 2003 Mainland China ZJZ's version: I like the 2003 actor in other TV series and he acted decently enough here, but Murong Fu needs at least three important traits in an actor: he must be handsome, intelligent and very devious. Shek Sau has that in spades. I don't believe anyone can rival him. Watching Shek Sau, I can (at long last) understand why Wang Yuyang prefers this man: he's suave and devious at the same time. The 2013 actor looks more than Dongfang Bubai than Murong Fu. Some people might prefer Liu Tao as Ah Zhu, but my preference is for Wong Hang-sau. She has a melancholic intelligence which makes her acting memorable. My opinion is that Liu Tao is too beautiful as a maid... Duan Zhengchun would have raped his own daughter--before he knew her--if she was Liu Tao... Chan Fuk-sang, an actress from Taiwan, is to me the perfect Ah Zi. Chen Hao's version looks cute and pitiful; Chan Fuk-sang's version is cruel and pitiful. She plays the sadistic girl to perfection; there is a pitiful willfulness to her interpretation that lingers in the mind. Other well cast characters (from other TV series) I can remember are Deng Chao as Zhang Wuji and Ady An as Zhao Min. Their acting may not be perfect but their looks are as I can imagine from the book. I can't comment much about the acting since I didn't like the directing of that series...

kyc agree with you that TLBB1982 is the best cast adaptation! to add to your comments, i have to point out that kent tong not only looks princely but shows the depth of duan yu--he may have been a lovesick fool, but he wasn't "retarded" like too many other actors like to portray.

Siuyu, Kent Tong as Duan Yu is very good. He didn't irritate me like Jimmy Lin who I feel overacted. I went over to Youtube to watch an episode of 2013 TLBB. Wow, the Ah Zi in that version is really bad... acting cute and things like that... And the production designer ought to be shot for swathing her in a gaudy purple cloth... does people know what subtlety is nowadays? If I were Xiao Feng I would have killed her with a palm if she were so irritating, LOL.

I don't know why, but my impression on WYY (based on the novel), she's a very pretty girl but DUMB and an opportunist girl with no personality at all. Somehow Idy Chan didn't look that 'dumb'.

I watched 1982 and 2006 adaptation. and I can't decide which is better for Ah Zi. I have to say that according to the novel, Ah Zi is very annoying! And the 2006 adaptation made Ah Zi so annoying - which is just exactly on how she's supposed to be. Ah Zi in 1982 is not that annoying, she's great for those who didn't read the novel. but if you want to be loyal to the book, Ah Zi in 2006 is the most annoying. If you want to strangle her to death, means the actress did a great job as Ah Zi! LOL

I'm going to reread TLBB before the end of the year and will decide if she is really that annoying, LOL.

So true. it was so kind of the director to cast Idy Chan as WYY. at least it gave WYY a bit sense of character instead of an airhead pretty girl.

To be honest, that Ah Zi is probably only super annoying in that one episode I happened to watch. I have not watched the entire series.

I have finished reading TLBB a second time and I must say I find Bao Butong (2nd edition, not as in the 3rd edition) more annoying than Azi!
Also watched 10 episodes of the 2013 TV series. Seriously, it's not that bad... there are parts I like even more than the 2004 version. It has enough to make me want to continue watching it. Wallace Chung puts a lot of effort into crafting his character, although he often errs on the cautious side. Still, he gets high marks for effort. Kim Kibum is watchable although he has distracting mannerisms, like puffing his cheeks in a very Korean way.
Maybe I will share more thoughts by starting a thread on the 2013 TV series, IF I finish the series on Youtube, rather than hijacking this thread, LOL.
