I've only read the children's version. I've been having this thing with femme fatales since I was young so I had alot of issues on this book. Yeah, yeah, I know Da-Ji and co. are personally involved in some death and cruelty so it's not like they can really get away with it. However, in the end...King Zhou still gets to have a star. So despite the whole point of the story he has a ... good ending? (Not to mention a lot of characters on his side.) Oh and Jiang Ziya doesn't become a star, another WTF.
Besides scapegoating Da-Ji, the magic involved is quite interesting. The various transforming of characters, like Nuo-Ja and bizarre ones such as Lei Zhenzi and Yang Ren are also quite a spectacle.
So while not one of the 4 Classics, I always felt that the imagination is greater than Journey to the West.

And I agree with yenchin Daji and her gang were such a cruel femme fatales. This book also mentioned about orgy things. Daji and the emperor, with the pool of wine and meat, with naked young males and females. So yeah, the imagination is great, but also the cruelty and crazyness.

I just read this one : According to the Investiture of the Gods, Jiang Ziya recognized that King Zhou was a well-versed and well-trained individual that became an incapable ruler only because of having fallen victim to seduction. After his death, Jiang Ziya deified King Zhou as the Tianxi Xing (天喜星 "Star of Heavenly Happiness"). As the Tianxi Xing, he had the responsibility of managing the marriage affairs of humans.
WTH??? King Zhou Di Xin was an awful man and he had the responsibility of managing the marriage affairs of humans??? I guess it justifies why so many marriages are wreaking havoc since the god of marriage is such a lustful man who love orgies with pool of wine and meat :s :S

But anyways, this is additionally bizarre as the whole point of the story was to punish Zhou for having some sexual fantasy over Nu Wa's statue and defiling her temple with graffiti. As the premise goes Zhou was already a "bad" guy at the beginning. Calling him a victim sounds like adding some more blame to Da-Ji and co.

My biggest problem with the setting is that Nu Wa ordered Daji and gang to lead King Zhou astray and make him lost his kingdom. But, at the end she put all the blame on Daji and executed her.
