Many series in these past few years use this 后宫 aka. the back palace - a palace where the empress and concubines lived - as a main topic. Basically all the stories are relatively the same. About a concubine/ palace maid that had to fight and involved in all these females politics fighting to win emperor's heart and position. A lot of them were naive girl, then had to survive and turned to be a cunning woman to get into power.
Anyone can tell me why this theme is very popular? is it any good?

Admin I think it might try to promote China as a soft World Superpower and for those older fans who are not Fans of K Pop. Story Of Yangxi Palace is one of the example. In my opinions only, hope you all don"t get offended,It better than those Korean serials which only have fairly tale love story with Korean handsome boy and Koreans pretty girl which all face almost look the same in office in unrealistic world.

I have never watched Korean series also. LOL. Actually I watched Empress Palace (Zhen Huan Zhuan) and other almost similar theme series... but none of them I could finish to watch. I felt like watching series where some naive girls turn into bi#ches who manage to win and get the power and what they wanted. Sigh...perhaps I'm an old school...I still think that wuxia - with its chivalrous and heroic stories are much better and have better values. I don't mind 'spending' my time for wuxia. But for those hou gong theme series... nah...I won't bother.

People like to watch conflict, regardless of the issue? My wife watched both Zhen Huan and Yan Xi, mostly to kill time, and usually the dialogue I overheard usually involved getting babies, various methods of inducing stillborn on pregnant concubines, and some other unclear issues resulting in the concubines screaming and pleading for mercy. Just not interested.
(Another of my "wild thoughts". If someone would make a harem drama with Wu ZeTian or some imaginary empress as the center interest and a harem full of men and women involved in complicated LGBT relationships. THAT I'd watch.)

Li Shimin's crown prince was a gay. So I guess this story just has to be developed more

The main question... people are a bit sadist and they like to see other people suffer, like Azi? Don't be too sure of your goodheartedness... maybe everyone of you like to poke your fingernails into the porcelain skin of your nearest rival, hee hee.

I'm not sure if I like to see other people suffer like A Zi in films. BUT....sometimes I want to have Wolverine's claws, that I could just pierce my enemies with them

I usually don't spend time watching TV series, but if I catch my mum following such a series, I usually watch them as comedies. What those concubines do to one other are repetitively wicked, and you get jaded after a while.

I prefer to watch wuxia series or historical fictions series. I don't like watching intrigues where peoples (especially women) doing schemes and tactics to hurt, trap, and kill their opponents. Even villains in wuxia series are usually not that tricky and crafty At least they claimed that they're evil and villains, and don't pretend that they're weak and helpless like those concubines.

I guess the novel probably was too explicit and descriptively erotic - like a porn novel, that's why it can't be tolerated. China is okay with homosexuality - but not okay with any porn literature. Last time I watched a series about Li Shimin. Li Shimin's son homosexual conduct with his eunuch was shown explicitly. And the illicit affair between 17th Princess with the monk Bianji was also clearly shown.

It has explicit homosexual themes but perhaps isn't so explicit with sex descriptions.

I watched a few episodes of The Story Of Yanxi Palace to accompany my mum. It's airing on a free-to-air channel in Singapore. Seriously it's not bad. However, I'm more a movie than TV series guy. Generally good acting, well cast, script is decent if archetypal of this genre.
