Fans Break Down Their Thoughts on “The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre” 2018 Remake Jin Yong (金庸) may have left our mortal realm, but his legacy will live on. Cathay Media’s remake of Jin Yong’s wuxia novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre <倚天屠龙记> will soon grace TV screens this year, and a three-minute trailer of the show has been revealed online. The final installment to Jin Yong’s Condor Trilogy, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre is set in the late Yuan Dynasty, nearly 100 years after Guo Jing’s adventures. This is the eighth official television remake of the novel, with the last adaptation being released in 2009, released in China by the Huayi Brothers. 2018’s version stars 21-year-old Joseph Zeng (曾舜晞) as Zhang Wuji, with 21-year-old Chen Yuqi (陈钰琪) as Zhao Min and 26-year-old Zhu Xudan (祝绪丹) as Zhou Zhiruo. Although enthusiastic about the remake, fans were disappointed with the overall impression of the show once the trailer dropped. Fans said too many computer graphics lacks authenticity as a wuxia show. There were too many slow-mo action shots, making it more difficult to get invested in the show’s intense fight sequences. Many scenes were filmed with a green screen, making the overall feeling “too xianxia” (fantasy). Nonetheless, fans did praise the show’s high production value and it aligns with the current photography trend. Fans were also pleasantly surprised with the casting, specifically the three leads. Kathy Chow (周海媚), who played Zhou Zhiruo in the 1994 remake of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, stars as Miejue. www.jaynestars.com/news/fans-break-down-their-thoughts-on-the-heaven-sword-and-dragon-sabre-2018-remake/icdrama.to/watch-online-the-heaven-sword-and-the-dragon-sabre-2019-episode-01-127604.html

@galvatron : thanks for posting. I was about to post it but then I'm late I guess although some people got dissapointed with the CGI and too xianxia like, but overall market might like it. Recently I befriend with many youngsters from China. And apparently many of them have that kind of 'taste'.

Watched this series up to 5 episodes, because it's only free on my smart TV up to episode 5. And I really won't bother to pay to watch for the next series. Here's my thought: 1. Zhang Cuishan : the young ZCS looked like a perverted scholar. This guy really doesn't know how to act. I can't see the difference between him trying to control himself not to laugh and angry expression. He also cursed - which is something that Wudang Seven Swordsmen won't do (at least that's my impression on them, I don't really remember the details in the book). The actor got better and looked better as an older ZCS with a moustache. After ZCS and YSS lived in the ice island, ZCS looked darker- no longer thick make up, and this his real skin color and moustache make him much watchable than previously. Here are ZCS of HSDS 2019 2. Yin Susu : a childish lady who stomped up her feet and cried when she's panicked. A girl with a very THICK make up. Geez, her foundations and powder are so thick. After ZCS and YSS lived in the ice island, YSS still looked very fancy with her thick makeup and eyelashes. Oh yeahhhhhhhh 3. Xie Sun : so this guy has greenish eyes not on his pupil...but on his retina And after he got blind, his eyes color changed into white and blueish.

Miejue Shitai:She does a good job as Miejue. She got the acting skill and the look! Although personally I think that she looks much older compared to last series I saw her in 2014. Yang Xiao :Okay....this Yang Xiao. In the novel YX should be a charming charismatic pretty handsome middle aged man. But what I saw in this series is a mid thirties guy with a thick makeup and LIPSTICK. Let me repeat : yes...LIPSTICK. It makes him more like Dongfang Bubai rather than Yang Xiao of Ming Cult. There's a scene when he played harp, and he stroked his hair. Seriously....I don't get it why they have to make YX into a sissy guy? Unless Ji Xiaofu was a girl who like sissy guy, I don't see any point any girl would be attracted to a guy like that. sorry, but this guy doesn't fit any criteria to be YX. But he could be a good Dongfang Bubai!

I only watched up to episode 5. And only saw some clips for adult ZWJ and his love interests. And here what I found on Chinese website and what some fans comment: ZWJ's wifes all looked the same. And what's more terrible is that ZWJ and those girls look similar too! Judge it by yourself....and if you watch it, please make some review/comment.

Abbess Miejue is too pretty and Yang Xiao looks so... gay?
Edit: Carelessly watched one episode. There are far too many slo-mo in the fight sequences. Very self-conscious.
These new adaptations are not to my taste. I prefer something more grounded in strong acting, storytelling, not fancy camera tricks and just good looking cast. HD cannot help you if you don't do the basics well.

Abbes Miejue is not too pretty, I think Kathy Chow does a good job here. But Yang Xiao looks so gay. Seriously, he should be cast as Dongfang Bubai!

As a result, sometimes watching the series become so unbearable. It looks so obvious, two actors who were fighting and facing each other. But one's eyes were looking on that direction/angle, but the other one's eyes were looking at other direction/angle. Totally look fake and unrealistic.

This new Jin Lion Si Xun doesn't look very aggressive for his given name.
Would it have been better to have the actor that play as Gu Jian Hun in Palm of Budha play as Jin Lion Si Xun?
He looks more charismatic?

Do You mean in this drama he marry all the girls in the picture ? Have 4 wives? I only watching TVB version until episode 13. Admin please advise Have anyone's here finish watching this one already Hola! I don't want to continue this drama. It's a paid VOD on my smart TV and only free up to episode 5. I don't want to bother to pay for this series though. LOL. I am disappointed mainly because I don't see any spirit of wuxia in this series. This series is more like a drama instead of wuxia. But the casting...just as you could see on the pictures I have posted. Yang Xiao looks more like Dongfang Bu Bai to me. He's sissy and wear lipstick. Zhang Cuishan looks like a little bit 风流 scholar instead of a strong character scholar like in the novel. I haven't seen the part of grown up Zhang Wuji. He looks handsome in the pictures though. But his girls look all the same to me. Of course, everyone loves beautiful girls and good looking guys. But then...it's too much if you see good looking people whose face have no characters at all. They all look the same to me ...perhaps the make up? or probably I have some distorted vision or something? The slow motion is too much and I can't bear it. Also, this adaptation doesn't even shoot the Wudang Mountain with its real monasteries. They used studios to portrayed the inner hall of Wudang Monasteries. Geez!! Some of those who have never read the book or watched the previous adaptation might find this adaptation good and okay. But for JY loyalist, and those who read the novel, errrrrrrr..don't think so. Yes, Kathy Chow does a good job here.

There have been few discussion by some that say they want a new remake of the whole serious by just the same production group and director rather than having multiples directors and film production group each making their own separate versions.....
What do you guys think of such suggestions?
Just wondering since Guo Jing doesn't teach Xiang Long Shi Ba Zhang to Guo Po Lou but what about the grand martial strategy guide of the great general? Wouldn't Guo Jing have taught Guo Po Luo about the grand martial strategy guide?
Perhaps I should watch the show again but how come the grand martial strategy guide wasn't used in the battle of Xiang Yang?

Like I said before, I don’t like this HSDS. It has issues that are common among Mainland China wuxia adaptations: 1) Excessive slow motion in action scenes 2) I don’t see much martial arts choreography. Maybe that’s why they use so much slow-mo. 3) Overuse of diffusion filters 4) Generic faces. There’s no attempt to pick different looks. Their hairstyles, attires, make-up are all similar. 5) Of the three leads, Joseph Zeng is the biggest problem. He has serious problem emoting. His eyes aren’t expressive enough. The Zhou Zhiruo is weak and only the Zhao Min makes any impression acting. Even so, I don’t consider Yukee Chen among the more memorable ZMs. 7) The overall impression is a factory-line “idol drama”. If you don’t know the plot, it may still be watchable. If you care about good acting, I would say give this HSDS a miss. I’ll highlight two problems with this HSDS which I think characterize many recent JY productions. The first is the casting. Look at these three actresses: Do they not look similar? Especially the left one who plays Yang Buhui, the extreme right one who plays Zhao Min. With such a large gene pool, they keep casting actresses with similar features and facial shapes in the same TV series. And make them up the same. There is also the problem of respecting the novel. In the book, Zhang Cuishan’s moniker is 銀鉤鐵劃 (JY 3.0: 鐵畫銀鉤), meaning his weapons are a silver hook and an iron panguan pen. This is Simon Yam in the 1986 version, holding the right weapons: Somehow in this version Zhang Cuishan ends up with a sword: It is about respecting the novel and the character (although this HSDS is the third adaptation with him holding a sword). Even more amazingly, instead of inscribing calligraphy with those weapons in his duel with Xie Xun, Zhang Cuishan here scribbles with his palm on the floor: BTW, Kathy Chow is definitely the cutest Abbess Miejue!
