Nalan Xingde is a Qing Dynasty poet. He's around the same age with Kangxi Emperor, and he was Kangxi's personal bodyguard. He's considered as 文武全才 a man excel in both literary and military. He got married when he's twenty, and three years later his wife died because when delivering her baby. Apparently, Nalan Xingde loved his wife so much that during three years of marriage, he produced many love poems inspired by her. After she died, he took other concubines, and one of his last concubines was also good in poetry. Nalan Xingde died when he's only 30 years old. Some part of this poem, is used as a lyric of the song in Seven Swords (the series), the song title in Chinese is 空船. And Nalan Xingde appeared in many tv series, as Kangxi's friends, or even love rival. I think I saw an episode of a series where Hawick Lau played as Kangxi and Vin Zhang as Nalan Xingde. Here is the poem: 山一程,水一程 The journey through a vast mountains and long rivers A journey from the outer wall to Yu Pass (Shanhai Guan Pass) Thousands of lights from the soldier's tents. The wind is harsh, the snow is fierce The sound of scattering snow, an unfulfilled dream of a homeland Old hometown (Beijing) has no this kind of sound Apparently, this poem was written by Nalan Xingde when he accompanied Kangxi during his inspection tour expedition to the northeast. If no dictionary, I wouldn't be able to translate it! Long live dictionary!!! Anyway, he probably used the Yu Pass as it's the gate of victory for the Manchu. Also, he probably used the word thousands of lights from the soldiers' tent to show how magnificent and grandeur Kangxi's entourage during his inspection tour.

Thank you, Admin , for the poems. Nalan Xingde is said to be the best poet from Qing Dynasty. I'm reading LYS's Pingzong Xiaying now and as usual, it contains a lot of Chinese poetry, many by Zhang Danfeng.

Song for a Beauty - by Li Yannian - Han Dynasty.
There's an entrancing beauty on the north
Whose beauty stands alone.
With one glance she collapsed a town
With a second glance she collapsed a country
Prefer to not know , whether cities fall or empires collapse,
Such beauty never comes around twice.
Li Yannian was a eunuch during Han Wudi time. He was actually a talented musician, but because of certain circumstances, he was sent to castration and served at the court. He was a handsome young man. And Han Wudi (a bisexual) was enchanted by him. At that time Li Yannian was actually a eunuch in charge of the emperor's hounds. But then because of his talent in music and singing, the emperor then put him in charge of the court musician (while also as his sleeping partner).
One day Li Yannian sang this song, and Han Wudi (who was a man who indulged in sex, both with women and men) sighed after he heard that song. He said : "I wonder in there's really any beauty like that exist on earth!"
Li Yannian then made an arrangement with Princess Pingyang (Han Wudi's sister). Princess Pingyang had a close relationship with Han Wudi. And she knew that her brother had a weakness in good looking women/men who could sing or dance. Actually Han Wudi got his second empress, also from Princess Pingyang's recommendation. Therefore Princess Pingyang said to Han Wudi, that there's indeed that kind of beauty, and that woman was Li Yannian's younger sister. He told Han Wudi that actually Li Yannian made that poem to praise her sister's beauty. The middle-aged Han Wudi was so happy when he got this teenager beauty. It's not clear if she's really that beautiful because actually it's pretty weird if Li Yannian really made that poem to praise his own sister's beauty. But Li Yannian's sister, together with Li Yannian, indeed could make Han Wudi happy. For years, Li family enjoyed many privileges because of the status of this Concubine Li and Li Yannian. Another brother of Li Yannian, called Li Ji was also brought to the palace as a palace musician. Li Ji was a womanizer and had scandals with a lot of the palace maids. But Han Wudi closed his eyes and pretended that he knew nothing. Another brother, Li Guangli was also appointed as a military commander.
Later on, Concubine Li died because of illness. Then her brother, Li Guangli defected to the Xiongnu. Han Wudi was enraged and had Li Yannian and Li Ji sentenced to death.
This song appeared in 四面埋伏 The House of Flying Dagger

Last time we had the discussion of this poem in Hokkien section : wuxiasociety.freeforums.net/thread/936/hokkien-discussion?page=1春花秋月何时了 Chūnhuā qiūyuè hé shíliǎo When will the spring flowers and autumn moon end? 往事知多少 wǎngshì zhī duōshǎo How much do you know about the past? 小楼昨夜又东风 xiǎo lóu zuóyè yòu dōngfēng Last night an east wind blew on this small building 故国不堪回首月明中 gùguó bùkān huíshǒu yuè míng zhōng In this moonlight, I can not bear to think of the past, of the fallen country 雕栏玉砌应犹在 diāo lán yù qì yīng yóu zài Carved balustrades and marble steps are still remain 只是朱颜改 zhǐshì zhū yán gǎi Only that beautiful face changed 问君能有几多愁 wèn jūn néng yǒu jǐ duō chóu Asking myself how much disconsolate do I have 恰似一江春水向东流 qiàsì yī jiāng chūnshuǐ xiàng dōng liú Just like a river of spring water rolling towards the east Li Yu (Chinese: 李煜; c. 937[3] – 15 August 978[4]), before 961 known as Li Congjia (李從嘉), also known as Li Houzhu (李後主; literally "Last Ruler Li" or "Last Lord Li"), was the third ruler[1] of the Southern Tang state during imperial China's Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. He reigned from 961 until 976, when he was captured by the invading Song dynasty armies which annexed his kingdom. He died by poison on orders of Emperor Taizong of Song after 2 years essentially as an exiled prisoner. Although an incompetent ruler, he was a representative lyric poet during his era, even to the extent of having been called the "first true master" of the ci form In vernacular prose, it should be : When will this year end? How much do you know about the past? Last night there was another spring wind* in the small building. On this bright moonlit night, how can I bear the pain of recalling my old country? Carved railings, Jade steps should still be there. It's just that the person you miss is old. Ask me how much sorrow I have in my heart. Like this endless torrent of spring water rolling eastward * Note: east wind/ spring wind could also be translated as revolutionary momentum The song of this poem in Hokkien: Mandarin version :

ummmmm... wrong Li Yu that you're referencing, Admin... the Li Yu that is the actual author of this and many other poems is 李煜 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Yu_(Southern_Tang)), who lived and reigned during the five dynasties and ten kingdoms era, post-tang. he was an emperor in his own right until he was deposed.

Ode To Gallantry in Jin Yong use a same title of Li Bai's poem , the poem appears on chapter 1. there are total 24 verses, the same number of chambers in heroes' island

Jin Yong's best poem I can remember is the chapter title poems of Demigods and Semi-devils.
In fact I can't remember any other poems by him save the chapter title poems of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber and The Book and the Sword.

Who says that the withered flowers do not make people feel pity? That time when we traveled together, the flowers were blooming But now my travel companion has gone and I'm alone heartbroken In front of me, the spring rain just showered the petals safflower The willows branches sway like silk threads in the haze 倩魂销尽夕阳前 q The beautiful scenery of sunset makes the girl's dream vanished
Another Ci poetry by Nalan Xingde. This poem appeared on the series But in the series, it was Kangxi who recited this poem when he felt lonely.

A poem by Li Bai about the First Emperor. It's a very beautiful poem. I can't translate it word by word, therefore I just put the meaning of the poem. Qínwáng sǎo liùhé, hǔshì hé xióngzāi! (The king of Qin swept the world, how majestic was his bravery Huī jiàn jué fúyún, zhūhóu jǐn xī lái. He waved his sword and disperse the floating cloud, the vassal kings were brought to the west (it means : when the First Emperor used his military power, he conquered all the other six states and brought their kings as captives to his capital in the west - Xianyang) Míngduàn zì tiānqǐ, dàlüè jià qún cái. He got his mandate from heaven and ruled all the talented men 收兵铸金人,函谷正东开。 Shōubīng zhù jīn rén, hán gǔzhèngdōng kāi. He collected all the weapons and casted giant metal statues, Hangu Pass is now opened and the world is at peace (The First Emperor collected all the weapons from the states he conquered and casted the metals into 12 giants statues guarding the Xianyang gates. Hangu Pass is the most important fortress for Qin) Míng gōng kuaìjī lǐng, chěng wàng lángyá tái. He engraved his merits in a monument at Kuaiji Peak, at Langya Platform (Note : Langya Monument is one of the two monuments written by the order of Qin Shihuang which is still existed until now. Kuaiji Mountains is located around Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province) Xíng tú qīshí wàn, qǐ tǔ lí shānwēi. He sent 700,000 of prisoners of wars to work on his mausoleum in Mount Li. Shàng cǎi bùsǐ yào, mángrán shǐ xīn āi. Can't get the immortal elixir, and he lamented Lián nǔ shè hǎiyú, zhǎng jīng zhèng cuīwéi. With his crossbow he shot the giant whale É bí xiàng wǔyuè, yáng bō pēn yún léi. The sea beast was humoungous with forehead and nose like the peak of the Five Sacred Mountains. It created a giant wave and mist when it appeared on the sea surface Qí liè bì qīngtiān, hé yóu dǔ pénglái? The mist covered the blue sky, then how could he see Penglai? (Note: Penglai is the island where the immortals live. A fairyland.) Xú fú zài qín nǚ, lóu chuán jǐshí huí? Xufu brought the children of Qin, when is that big vessel return home? (Xufu was an alchemist who lied to Qin Shihuang and said that he knew where Penglai Island was located. It's a far away land, therefore he had to bring 6000 children on a huge vessels, in case if he died on the way to Penglai, these children would continue the journey to get the elixir for the emperor.) Dàn jiàn sān quán xià, jīn guān zàng hán huī. Just look at the three feet below the spring, the gold coffin where his cold ashes was buried.
Not a very good translation. But I guess the readers would be able to get the sentimental feeling of Li Bai when he wrote this poem.
