GuQin - similar to Zither , 7 strings , used by ren ying2 3. GuZheng - similar to Guzheng n Zither, 18 strings , higher note than GuQin 4. Xiao - similar to flute, bamboo material, used by Huang Yaoshi 5. Pipa - similar to guitar 6. Dizi - the side-blown bamboo flute 7. Drum

That's the most common and portable musical instruments that often appeared in wuxia films I guess.
Many Chinese historical dramas often depict the gong (bells), cymbals, trumpet, sheng (the shape is almost like panflute). But in wuxia, these musical instruments are seldom and almost never appeared. Probably because they are not easily portable and not 'romantic'enough.

my impression is that if any wuxia character played an instrument, it usually would be the guqin. it's definitely seen as the refined instrument. Admin wouldn't it be hilarious if those humongous bells was the primary weapon of a very powerful wuxia hero? imagine the strength he'd need to just lug those things around! LOL!

LOL! siuyiu : that was my impression also. Perhaps because many wuxia novels and series depicted them that way. But after learning and playing guqin by myself, I realized that guqin depiction in wuxia novels and series, is not that accurate. Guqin - unlike guzheng, has a deep low voice, and it's such a personal musical instrument. Therefore even if the most powerful wuxia hero uses their internal strength to play guqin, the sound of guqin is still impossible to be heard from a distance. A guqin voice is almost impossible to be heard beyond the radius of 20 meter. And even for a guqin to be able to be heard in 20 m distance is already extra ordinary. And also, it's difficult and almost impossible to play a guqin in your lap, therefore a pose like this in the pic, is basically possible...but the player could not play the music properly. Therefore right now I personally believe, that the most possible musical instrument that could be used for weapons for wuxia heroes are: erhu (like Mo Da Xiansheng in XAJH), flute (Huang Yaoshi), Zheng (like in 6 demons finger lute), and pipa (don't remember any heroes using pipa)

siuyiu : that woman picture is definitely just a pose. For the wuxia fighters, IF the person is pretty tall (at least 175 cm) with a long upper thigh, then it might be possible. But average persons, especially girls - are almost impossible to play guqin on their laps. This is the explanation: * guqin's 5th dot should be placed two clenched fists from the body centre (navel). For someone around 165-172 cm tall, that would be around 18-23 cm. * And guqin's wide could be around 20-27 cm up to the outer part. That makes the guqin will be on the edge of the lap, almost touched the knee, and that would make the guqin will not be able to sit firm on the lap. Then how could someone play guqin properly is the instrument can't sit firmly on his/her lap. On the other hand, it's not possible to drag the guqin closer to the body, as that will the right hand unable to play the strings properly. Therefore at least someone has his/her thigh's length is 50 cm, then playing guqin with guqin place on the lap is totally impossible. And also, the sound box of guqin is pretty narrow, therefore when guqin - which already has a low sound, is put in the lap (that would cover the sound box), then the sound would be even lower.
