I always thought my surname was Yang/ 楊 .Now it turns out my surname is the Rong/蓉 of Huang Rong/黃蓉 . I am now curious as to how Rong can be mistaken for Yang - what dialect base would that be? Over here in South East Asia, we run with Cantonese, Teochew, Fujian, Hakka and Hainanese quite often. So, depending on which dialect group your name was transliterated from. if your family name is Chen 陈 could well turn out to be Chan, Chin, Tan, Ding and Ting. Huang 黄 could be Wong, Ong or Heng and possibly Wee or Ooi - but I am not sure about the last two. Cai 蔡 could be Choy, Chai or Chua. Lin 林 could be Lum, Lim or Lin.

In Vietnam 楊 is pronounced Dương where the "D" is pronounced like a "Z" or "J" in English.

chefying i've also seen 蔡 transliterated as Tsai and Choi Tsai is Wade-Giles romanisation of Mandarin while Cai is HanYu Pinyin. Taiwan uses the Wade-Giles romanisation system. Choi is the Hong Kong preferred transliteration based on Cantonese.

machete ahhhhh... then i see how there could've been the confusion. @all 楊 is usually transliterated as "yeung" (pronounced "yerng") while 蓉 is "yung" (pronounced "yoong"). but non-chinese tend to pronounced both as "young". so, with just a difference of one letter, it's easy to confuse the two. the surname 梁 (liang) is usually spelled "leung" in canto and is pronounced "lerng". i've heard so many non-chinese say "lung" (as in the breathing organ) instead.

I made a quick check on baidu for the surname 蓉 and it stated this surname is rather rare (in China). According to this page蓉姓 姓氏源流 一、蓉róng 现行较罕见姓氏。今山西之左权、山东之龙口、河南之卢氏、江西之永修、广东之高要、贵州之惠水等地均有分布。汉族姓氏。 this surname can be found in certain places in ShanXi, ShanDong, HeNan, JiangXi, GuangDong and GuiZhou.
