I am wondering about the feasibility of an idea for translating wuxia fiction:
Many books have been translated on spcnet for example. But they can never be published officially because of copyright issues.
I am wondering about the feasibility of crowdfunding to purchase copyright from Gu Long, Jin Yong and Liang Yusheng's copyrighted books. Some of the money can go to hiring professional editor(s) to edit the translations. I don't know how much it would cost to purchase copyright for a novel though.
If there's enough money raised, the translators can be paid too. The edited translations can be printed on demand (more practical and lower cost). Someone just needs to start a website and maintain it, and make sure that the printed books are being responsibly delivered to buyers.
I'm asking this because some of the translations on spcnet (like that of A Deadly Secret) are quite good. You don't need much editing. Others will of course need more editing. But I'm just wondering about the viability of this proposal: could some smart guy with good business acumen actually make it work? What do people think?

crowdfunding, something like kickstarter? it's a good idea, but i wonder who is capable doing that? It's just a thought but I also wonder if anyone can make it work. Usually people who visit Kickstarter and crowdfunding websites are tech-inclined. They are not necessarily book-inclined. On paper the "crowdfunding for copyright" concept can work. Maybe some publisher can consider the idea. If they can get enough wuxia lovers to put in some money, it may resolve the longstanding "copyright bottleneck" problem. They can offer first edition hardbacks with special bookmarks for those who donate more, for example. If they can do it as well as a Folio Society hardback, then I believe people will donate. www.foliosociety.com/row/a-hero-born-legends-of-the-condor-heroes.html
