Face Changing Skill 易容術 / 易容术 is quite common as an wuxia trope. I'm curious about this phenomenon in wuxia fiction. I wonder who started it and which authors have clearly used it as a plot point. Of course, a movie like Reign of Assassins also makes use of it.
The case that comes immediately to mind is A'Zhu from TLBB. Who else, in JY and the others? I don't quite remember for GL and LYS, but I'm sure they must have used it at some points right?

IIRC, su rongrong from GL's chu liuxiang was also an expert at this skill. that's the only other example i can think of, right now.

Since Gu Long was influenced by some Western material, I thought that the ability to wear masks and look like someone else was taken from Western espionage series since Wuxia novels that preceded him don't have this element(I think). However I could be wrong here. I searched using the words "History of rubber masks in espionage series" but couldn't find anything.
Edited:Oh, just read that TLBB(1963) already had masks like that. Probably before Western series had that type of plot(maybe).

I'm quite sure some wuxia writer created this skill and not JY, GL or some writers from the West. It's also used in LYS, in his later works I'm unfamiliar with.
Two other names that cropped up are Wang Lianhua from Wulin Waishi and Song Tian'er from the Chu Liuxiang series.
Another name mentioned is Dai Qisi (Golden Flower Granny) from HSDS.
It seems that Wen Ruian also has many characters skilled in this. On second thoughts, I don't know if Reign of Assassins can be considered an example as the face changes there are permanent.

i just remembered Yi Zhi Mei (the vigilantes in the masks), i watched the 2010 drama, one of the member, He Xiaomei, constantly using disguise skill to finish the mission, i dont know who wrote the story, but cmiiw i heard that it is related to folklore from 1600+ and has been adapted to more than 10 times into drama/film since 1960.

Depends on how you define the skill. She only changed to one look, a granny. As for Reign of Assassins, it's a spoiler, but the guy did, if I remember right. It's the twist. |
