I hope this doesn't deteriorate into a nasty argument. I just want to ask, do you really think that the forced vegetarianism in the Loveless Valley is "cruel" like what Jin Yong wrote? Jin Yong has a point. Gongsun Zhi made everyone follow a vegetarian diet because if he tasted even a centimeter of meat, his skills would be destroyed. For now I believe it is quite cruel because some people who are forced not to eat meat will experience withdrawal symptoms, feel "funny" and their diet will be messed up. However a vegetarian would have a different opinion than me and will say "if I can go on a diet of veggies then anybody else can". If you tell them about the withdrawal symptoms, all hell will break loose. Can't blame them though, cause some people who own farms can be really nasty to farm animals so the vegans believe that stopping meat consumption is the best way to safeguard the well being of living things which are not human.
So my question here is; as a personal question, do you think you can live without eating meat or do you feel that you can continue living on vegetables only?
(I checked the Singapore comic book which has the passage saying that the "forced vegetarianism was cruel" but I don't know if the ROCH novel has that passage itself)

i could never become vegetarian and definitely not vegan--i love meat and eggs too much!
but vegetarianism wasn't that foreign a concept to the chinese who followed taoist and, later, buddhist teachings.
GSZ making it clear that his skills required him to be vegetarian isn't that different from men who practised abstinence in order to practise "tong chi gong" (sorry, too lazy to look up the pinyin--basically the "virgin boy" martial arts). and any disciples of loveless valley would not see it as a hardship to be vegetarian in order to perfect their skills.

You can adopt a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, but you must have enough Vitamin B12 in your diet, which is only produced by bacteria.
I suppose water taken by ancient people was not antiseptic, which means it contained some bacteria and Vitamin B12. Certainly Buddhist monks did not face this problem in the past.
Nowadays, this problem is easily remedied by taking supplements.
Gongsun Zhi is sure authoritarian, but you may be surprised how many people nowadays find the eating of animal meat distasteful (especially animal lovers). I am more intrigued by the lack of Vitamin D in the Ancient Tomb Sect. Does Xiaolongnv and her descendants get enough egg yolks, milk or sunlight? She doesn't do much marketing, as far as I know. An interesting question...
I like meat, especially chicken and fish, but not too much.

I could never and will never become a vegetarian. I guess everyone has a different gene and metabolism. People like me need more protein and iron for my body. And without meat, I would just get very dizzy and even fainted. But I know there are some people who genetically could live with vegetarian diet only. So who knows that people in Loveless Valley are genetically able to survive without meat?
I personally think that forcing people to eat or not to eat certain food is cruel.

I can confirm I experienced a sort of withdrawal symptom from lack of meat.
I was in India a few years back, and being the cheapskate that I am, I ate the common vegetarian street food. I also visited popular restaurants/ eateries which are vegetarian based (there are many vegetarians in India).
After a week of vegetarian food (which were delicious) I felt rather weak and a bit restless, which was remedied quickly after eating some chicken and some eggs.
