Anyone else watching this drama? It is available on youtube up to episode 11 so far (unless you're a prime member, you get access to more episodes) and it is not bad. I am only skimming through it, and it is quite dark and gory but yet believable. I love the TVB 1985 adaption the best but I have to admit, it does seem too bright, colourful and cheerful at times given how the novel is more serious in nature. The TVB 1999 is not faithful to the novel but is quite funny. The 2007 version is not very good IMO, I was not a fan at all about the changes there. The actor as Hu Fei is not bad at all, he also looks better without hair, in other dramas he looks terrible with long hair. The actress who portrays Yuan ZhiYi is very serious and her fighting scenes show she has worked hard in training for this role. It is such a waste of Ray Lui to act in a few episodes and have him killed off (he was Hu Fei in the 1985 version). The actress who portrays as Cheng LingSu is quite pretty, but in the novel she should be dark and not very attractive. My main gripe is the actor who portrays Miao RenFeng (Lin YuShen), I do not like this man at all in any role. He was so sissy and awful as Yang Xiao in HSDS 2019. I have a hard time believing he is a highly skilled martial arts expert. I like Patrick Tse much better in the 1985 version (he normally portrays a womanizer but he is so good in the role of a tragic, single father). And finally we have an adaption where Ma ChunHua is portrayed as a strong woman who knows martial arts. In the 1985 adaption Angie Chiu is too old for the role and it seems like she doesn't even know how to fight. She is very good in tragic scenes however.

But I guess he's a little bit better as Miao Renfeng than as Yang Xiao. I watched HSDS 2019 when it was premiered and was unedited. The series color was very bright and too colorful. Therefore his thick powder and lipstick madde him suitable to be Dongfang Bubai rather than Yang Xiao

I also like the 1985 Flying Fox a lot. I never watched the 1999 version as most of the casting seems uninspired. To be honest, I cannot imagine Sunny Chan as Hu Fei; he seems much too introverted (I may be wrong).
The 2006 Nie Yuan version was disqualified on account of the producer Wong Jing.
So should I be watching this Tencent version? I see that iQiyi has a film adaptation coming up. Are they trying to outdo each other in destroying one of my favorite JY novels? I like to see a Hu Fei with stubble like in the book illustrations, otherwise he'll look too much like Chen Jialuo who is the fair and well-groomed scholar type.
It will take a brave producer/director to cast a not-so-attractive actress as Cheng Lingsu, but I expect spades of personality and really good acting.
BTW, why is Miao Renfeng in Ming Dynasty hairstyle?
The actor playing Fukang'an... also looks like Dongfang Bubai. Is this the new malaise?

BTW, why is Miao Renfeng in Ming Dynasty hairstyle? ---> I guess it's simply because the actor will look really awful in Manchu hairstyle LOL. I watched 1985 adaptation but I totally forget the story, I watched the 1999 and didn't really impressed with it. Today I checked on wikipedia : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Volant_of_the_Snowy_Mountain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Young_Flying_Fox So here's the characters description on wiki and the adaptation depiction comparison. 1. Miao Ruolan (苗若蘭; Miáo Ruòlán) is Miao Renfeng's daughter. She is forbidden to learn martial arts by her father, who does so to remind himself of the guilt of accidentally killing Hu Yidao. She falls in love with Hu Fei. ---> in this adaptation, when Hu Fei was around 17-18 years old, Miao Ruolan was just born. How old was Hu Fei when he met Miao Ruolan? 2. Tian Guinong (田歸農; Tián Guīnóng) is a descendant of one of the four bodyguards. He is a scheming and unscrupulous person who plots to kill Hu Yidao and Miao Renfeng in his plan to gain a higher social status. He smeared poison on their weapons and indirectly caused the death of Hu Yidao. An immoral, unscrupulous and flirtatious villain, he seduces Miao Renfeng's wife and causes her to abandon her husband and marry him instead. Seeking wealth and fame, he pledges allegiance to Fuk'anggan, who promises to help him become chief of the wulin in return for his loyalty and service. His dream is shattered when Hu Fei and his friends show up to disrupt the "Meeting of the Leaders" and cause a twist of events. ---> in this adaptation, he's a friend of Miao Renfeng. He heard the news that MRF died, therefore he showed up to take care of MRF's widow and child. 3. Nan Lan (南蘭; Nán Lán) is Miao Renfeng's wife. She feels unhappy after marrying Miao Renfeng, who leads a simple and frugal life as opposed to her luxurious lifestyle before her marriage. She is seduced by Tian Guinong and abandons her husband to marry Tian instead. ---> in this adaptation, she's a good devoted wife, but then Miao Renfeng never cared for her. MRF roamed all over Jianghu and almost never taken care his wife and child. Therefore when she heard the news about MRF's death, she easily fell in love to Tian Guinong was very kind and attentive to her. 4. Cheng Lingsu (程靈素; Chéng Língsù) is the apprentice of the "King of Venoms". She falls in love with Hu Fei when she first meets him while he was searching for a cure for Miao Renfeng. She later follows Hu Fei on his adventures and becomes his close companion. She gives up her life to save Hu Fei, who has been poisoned. Hu Fei is deeply saddened by her loss and he buries her beside his parents' grave. ---> up to episode 15, and Cheng Lingsu hasn't showed up yet. 5. Yuan Ziyi (袁紫衣; Yuán Zǐyī), also known as Yuanxing (圓性; Yuánxìng), is Feng Tiannan's illegitimate daughter. Her mother gave birth to her after being raped by Feng Tiannan and was forced to commit suicide by Tang Pei. She vows to avenge her mother and kill her beastly father (she needs to fulfil a promise to save his life thrice before she can kill him). Having taken an oath to be a Buddhist nun in her childhood, she cannot be together with Hu Fei even though she loves him. --->she appeares in an early episodes, almost become a savior of Hu Fei all the time. 6. Shang Jianming (商劍鳴; Shāng Jiànmíng) was the master of the Shang Family Castle who was killed by Hu Yidao several years ago. Hu Fei stumbles upon the castle and runs into trouble with Shang's widow and followers when they discover that he is Hu Yidao's son. ----> this incident happened when Hu Fei was just around 12 years old. In this adaptation, it's in the first 2-3 episodes.

I do love the 1985 version the best but I also think I am in love with this adaption as well. The colour and cinematography comes across darker and movie like, they are not afraid to show violence, blood, gore, rape and etc. I haven't liked a decent wuxia adaption in a while now. In fact I can't remember the last Mainland or Taiwanese wuxia TV series I've enjoyed in more than a decade now. The fight scenes and CGI are mostly good, the main cast has worked hard in action scenes and it shows. Some slow motion effects can be annoying but they're not too many. I was a huge shipper and fan of Hu Fei and Yuan ZhiYi until I saw Cheng LingSu and Hu Fei together.
I love Xing Fei as Cheng LingSu. At first I didn't think much of her but as the series progressed it is impossible to not like this woman. Her hairstyles and costumes are so cute and definitely stand out. My heart cracks every time Hu Fei is so stupid to see how much she loves him. He's always mentioning how much he misses ZhiYi in front of her. The part where they accept one another as brother/sister tore my heart to shreds because she is secretly in tears. This character is too good to be true but the actress sells it completely. Even the younger girl who tags around with them can see this and mentions it, how can Hu Fei be this dumb? It's even worst because we all know what will happen to her at the end; it is even in the trailer.
All the characters screen times are expanded but it is still believable. The actor as Hu Fei has worked hard in fighting scenes but when he fights Peter Ho (he is Tian GuiNiong) I can see Peter Ho is definitely more agile and better in fighting scenes. He's also a bit skinny, he should have worked out or eat a bit more. But overall his acting is quite good. The actress as Ma ChunHua is also quite good. She also is more younger and has more fighting scenes than Angie Chiu in the 1985 adaption. Yvonne Yung Hung (an ex ATV and TVB actress) is the Empress here and she has aged quite well.
The 1999 version is not faithful to the novel but it is funny and sometimes entertaining. However they combined Yuan ZhiYi, Ma ChunHua and Tian QingWen into one character named Nip SongChing and this character sucks. Joyce Tang is awful in this role. The role of Cheng LingFu is also eliminated but a new character named Yiu YatYat (One-One) is invented instead. She is a disciple of Tian GuiNiong's master but she can only learn 3 moves to defeat him and she talks a lot and is in love with Hu Fei. She also dies sucking poison to save Hu Fei's life at the end. She is not very attractive and dresses very plain. (This is true to the novel however).
Also Miao RuoLan gets raped by FuKang 'An in this adaption but thinks its actually Hu Fei because she was drugged so she blames Hu Fei and he has no idea what she is talking about... sound familiar anyone? Also Medicine King is not really dead here but appears at the very end to save Miao RenFeng's life... think about all the lives he could have saved if he had appeared sooner. The Red Flower Sect has so much screen time here, they have almost become main characters. Overall I prefer the newer adaption any day.

Okay so I have finished the adaption. I watched maybe 70% of it and skimmed the unnecessary stuff and various changes. It was all going so well and now my heart is broken. Reason 1, the ending doesn't follow the novel very much. At 40 episodes you'd think they have everything covered but it was so rushed that some things were like wtf? The novel itself isn't even long, how on earth did they manage to mess it up during the last 3-4 episodes boggles my mind. Okay so here is the ending. Yuan ZhiYi, her master and younger disciple are all in the capital City curing the Empress's illness and during this time Yuan ZhiYi shaves her head, fulfills her promise and becomes a nun (this part is after Hu Fei killed Feng TianNan.) Oh Yeah Feng TianNan and Tang Pei die before the martial arts election. In fact Tang Pei dies in a prison due to ZhiYi's tricks. FuKang An is plotting to kill all the martial arts experts during the election and it is Yuan ZhiYi who warns Hu Fei in time about this plan when she spars with him. Shi WanChen and Cheng Lingsu's seniors plot to poison everyone but Cheng LingSu foils their plans and is able to fend them off.
Cheng LingSu's seniors, Shi WanChen and Tian GuiNong nearly kill Hu Fei and Cheng LingSu who are badly injured but Miao RenFeng comes to their rescue. He beats the crap out of Tian GuiNong, slices all his tendons and stabs him many times until he is dead. Yuan ZhiYi's master uses this opportunity to threaten FuKang An's life and takes him as hostage to rescue themselves. However Miao Ren Feng also sacrifices himself so everyone else may live. We only hear him getting shot many times by the soldiers while everyone hides for cover and runs away. So... he dies. Ma ChunHua saw the carriage with Fu KangAn and got shot by an arrow trying to save him. There is NO Chen JiaLuo here, he doesn't seem to make an appearance. Zhao BanShan doesn't make an appearance here either. Ma ChunHua is able to see the real Fu KangAn (who was captured by the nun and her apprentices) before she dies and they allow him to return to his post. That's not what happened in the novel... His kids are cared for by the young girl who's been following Hu Fei and Cheng LingSu around and ZhiYi's junior. We assume they survive and live happily.
LingSu and Hu Fei goes to meet ZhiYi one last time and ask her the truth but it is too late. She has shaved her head, changed her name and bids farewell to Hu Fei. Hu Fei and LingSu are together for a while and there are intruders in their household who turns out to be her senior apprentices and Shi WanChen. She is tricked and nearly poisoned but Hu Fei saves her just in time and murders her two evil apprentices (I was rooting for him the whole time, they're so despicable) but in turn he gets poisoned by Shi WanChen. It is Hu Fei who slashes his eyes out and make him blind in this process (I believe it was someone else in the novel). Hu Fei is dying and LingSu knows there is only one way to save him. She sucks the poison from his body and reveals her true feelings, both are in tears and in pain. (Both parties act very well here I must say, it is hard not to cry for them). After Hu Fei is better he goes to murder Shi WanChen to avenge LingSu and burns his house to the ground with him still inside. I believe in the novel it is Ma ChunHua's corpses that was poisoned by Shi WanChen in the household, here it was Cheng LingSu's senior brother pretending to be a friend.
Nan Lan (Miao RengFeng's wife) survives and raises Miao RuoLan who appears to be in her teens at the end. They all pay their respects to Hu Fei's parents, Miao RenFeng and Cheng LingSu. Hu Fei has a beard now and it looks completely fake. The story seems incomplete though, I think they might be coming out with a part 2 which should be a continuation (The Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain). Unlike all other TV adaptions, this adaption focuses solely on the first short novel "Other Tales of Flying Fox" at 40 episodes which is quite long. But to be fair all the other TV adaptions have been around that length as well.
Xing Fei is excellent as Cheng LingSu. Just watch the adaption for her because this young actress can act and is quite pretty. My heart broke to pieces when she died. At least she got to be happy with Hu Fei for a while. I prefer this series over The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre 2019. It's a pity the ending was rushed and not wrapped up nicely plus so many changes.
