Gao Luo Pei is a Chinese name of Robert van Gulik. He was bornt in August 9th, 1920. He's a Dutch scholar, Orientalist, diplomat, translator, and novelist. As a Dutch diplomat, he was proficient in 15 languages, has been stationed in Surabaya, Batavia, (both are now in Indonesia) Tokyo, Chongqing, Washington, New Delhi, Beirut, Damascus, Kuala Lumpur and other places. His position range from the secretary, counselor, minister to the ambassador. Despite his diplomatic smooth career, but he carved his amateur scholar achievement in Chinese study which shape the Dutch understanding of China and, to a certain extent, also be attributed to the spread of Chinese culture in Holland. His detective novel "Di's Legal Case" has successfully created a "China's Sherlock Holmes", and was translated into many foreign languages publishing, leaving a heavy sum in the history of cultural exchanges between China and the world.

Judge Dee (also, Judge Di) is a semi-fictional character based on the historical figure Di Renjie, magistrate and statesman of the Tang court. The character first appeared in the 18th-century Chinese detective and gong'an crime novel Di Gong An. After Robert van Gulik came across it in a second-hand book store in Tokyo, he translated the novel into English and then used the style and characters to write his own original Judge Dee historical mystery stories.
The series is set in Tang Dynasty China and deals with various criminal cases solved by the upright Judge Dee (judges in ancient China were investigating magistrates.
