So as far as I see it, TLBB's main thematic unity stems from its Buddhist concept. Buddhist philosophy, as he admits, is essentially pessimistic: you have to stem defilements and move out of the Samsara to attain any peace of mind. TLBB is a distillation of that Buddhist philosophy which Jin Yong studied in the middle and late years of his life. Whether the novel is entirely successful in unity, I leave that to the floor. I personally can nitpick on some flaws but they are not on the thematic level. (The plot is too breathless and hectic for my liking at times, but it's a minor complaint.) Anyway, for such a vast novel, Jin Yong chooses three disparate characters to personify the troubles of living in the Samsara. I think he succeeds to a large extent. In other words, I feel that TLBB has a pervasive thematic coherence which works well in making it one of the great wuxia novels of the 20th century. Also, I think it's essentially a tragic novel, not a comic one (although it has comic elements in it).

I know nothing about Buddhism, but when I read this novel, it made me ponder about the life circumstances, etc. It's one of my favorite JY novel.

TLBB is an excellent wuxia novel. I have to add that I am not a Buddhist. I just happened to know a bit about Buddhism. I find Buddhist philosophy too pessimistic to my liking.

Seems like the French translated more wuxia than the Anglo-American world... Only four JY novels officially translated into English. No Liang Yusheng and only one Gu Long ( The Eleventh Son). Shame. Tianlong Babu will be very exciting to read the first time! As for the complete edition of Jin Yong on Ebay, I actually bought it after JY's death. It's the complete Taiwan version, nicer than the mainland version (better paper quality). No censorship of the afterword (a few lines on the Cultural Revolution). It's in Traditional Chinese. I bought the second edition because I can't stand the third.

i am interested with this Gu Long complete set , a total of 72 books (but i doubt its really complete), the price is affordable, less than 3000 yuan, if only i know chinese language This set should be the complete one, minus all his ghostwritten works. They would include the partially ghostwritten ones though. 3000 yuan affordable? To me, it's a lot of money.

yeah 3000 yuan is a alot of money, but if you divided it to 72 books, the price is only 42 yuan/book. and for jin yong's novel, unfortunately we only have 4 books in english , hope one day someone will translate "sword stained with royal blood", as the others at least have been translated to e-book

So far, I found Legend of the Condor Heroes (La légende du héro chasseur d'aigles) and I think that there is also Return of the Condor Heroes (Le justicier et l'aigle mythique), and now, there is Tian Long Ba Bu. Whiile I was searching in order to answer your question, I discovered that there is also a French version of Chinese Paladin (?) or, maybe Xia Ke Xing according to the summary of the plot : it's the story of a guy called " bastard " by his mother, who is taken by a martial arts master who teaches him, but not correctly (still according to the summary) in order that there is a conflict between the ying and the yang, and another master tris to help him. He is also mistalen for another one and doesn't remember to have fallen in love with a girl (whichm akes me thing that it might be Xia Ke Xing, because it looks like the 2001 version I recently watched). In French, it's called La balade des Paladins.

The only Gu Long's I found are three parts of Chu Liu Xiang and an abridged version of Huan Le Ying Xiong, translated as Les quatr bandits du Huabei...

does the french version also use french name for the characters? *guo jing, yang guo, huang rong, xiao long nu in my country Indonesia, we have all 15 Jin Yong's works translated, the problem is, they use first edition novel, plus hokkian name, when i read it, its make me headache, so i dont read it except Sword Stained with royal blood (because there is no english version of it)

For the Legend of Condor Heroes (I haven't read Return as yet), the names of Guo Jing and several other ones are kept, but it also seems to me that there are other names that have been translated, which is very stupid in my opinion.
As for Gu Long's Chu Liu Xiang, I think that it's the same : some Chinese names, but a lot of translations giving absolutely absurd names in French !

I did say Sword Stained with Royal Blood is a pretty good novel, but on hindsight it's not as good as the others.
