thanks siuyiu, so the main protagonist is Qi Shaoshang and perhaps also Guan Qi. this Guan Qi just showed up on the tv adaptation recently (episode 12), he is said from mitian sect, and have some relation with liufenban sect, but got imprisoned by the leader of liufenban sect for 8 years inside the well. looks like this strong fighter has a long lifespan even though he is not young anymore since his first appearance.

atumiwa i honestly don't know how many books make up the series--i just know there are a lot of them! my reference was the no-longer active rivers & lakes site plus wiki, so only online sources. so, this is wiki's list: 《四大名捕》系列(依故事時序排序) 《少年四大名捕》(少年冷血、少年追命、少年鐵手、少年無情)-未完結 (not completed) 《四大名捕震關東》(追殺、亡命) 《四大名捕會京師》(兇手、血手、毒手、玉手、會京師) 《四大名捕大對決》(談亭會、碎夢刀、大陣仗、開謝花、捕老鼠、打老虎、猿猴月、走龍蛇)-接續鬥殭屍 《四大名捕鬥僵屍》(猛鬼廟、白骨精、鬼門關、鐵布衫、杜小月、金鐘罩) -未完結 (not completed) 《骷髏畫》 《逆水寒》 《四大名捕破神槍》(妖紅、慘綠)-未完結 (not completed) 《四大名捕戰天王》(縱橫、風流)-未完結 (not completed) overall seems to match with your list--so, seems that there are multiple books belonging to the same overall "collection", so there are 9 collections but more than 9 books in total. and more than one collection is still a work-in-progress, so there are potentially more books to come.

Has anyone read WRA's wuxia novels? How do you rank them among the greats or Huang Yi?

Has anyone read WRA's wuxia novels yet? How do you rank them among the greats or Huang Yi? i've only read a small handful, including collections of short wuxia stories. WRA has a distinctive voice, his own, which is not as purposely literary like LYS or even JY and while more sparse, is not terse like GL's (nor so intentionally weird and audacious). i haven't read the four constable series, but from what i can gather, that's an early phase work, so more traditionally wuxia in tone. he found his voice starting with Xia Shao 俠少, where he doesn't quite hide his criticism about the faults of the politics and hierarchies among sects vying for power and the internal corruption therein. this novel seems to have open floodgates to his more mature works, where he delves deeper into the darker aspects of the wuxia genre. i haven't read huang yi, so i can't comment. i would say that WRA is worth trying because he does pose interesting food for thought in his stories. he also knows how to spin the yarn so that it's not just meta.
