New Wolong Sheng reprint released this week: 《金筆點龍記》(Gold Brush Dots the Dragon). This work was originally published in 1972. I've just begun reading it and will review it when I'm finished. I don't know all the story yet as I am just through the first chapter, but it's about a scholar studying for the metropolitan examination who saves a wounded 江湖人 (still haven't thought up a good translation for that, but it means someone is part of the jianghu, a martial artist in this case) and subsequently gets dragged into the affairs of the rivers and lakes.

siuyiuThis WLS's book is not on your list. 天馬霜衣 I wonder why your source leave it out. I google the book, doesn't seem to have any controversial about who the author is.

Does JohnD still visit this forum? I would like to know what is his opinion of this book after he finished it. The premise seem interesting, with a scholar being the central character.

About 'Frost Raiment of the Heavenly Steed (天馬霜衣)'. I got to know about this book when I read some discussion and articles about WLS's work. In one article I read, it said that in the story of 天馬霜衣, the wulin was dominated by 3 women. The male lead is only use in 'beauty trap' (美男計) because he's very handsome and all 3 powerful women love him. This premise sounds like those period war dramas where one side sent a beauty to the enemy camp to seduce the leader and cause the downfall of said leader and his camp. Famous example include the story of Diao Chan in ROTK and the story of Xi Shi. 天馬霜衣 is a gender reverse version of it.
This got me thinking. Did WLS write this kind of stories to purposely challenge tradition notion of gender roles or he just like strong women very much?

It's good to know other wuxia writers also feature strong female characters, not just LYS and Wang Dulu. I find some Jin Yong heroines (other than Huang Rong) wimpy.

Jin Yong's heroines are mostly love-focus because Jin Yong thought that love is the most important thing to many women. It often seems like the heroine's world revolves around the hero only. But, at the same time, I find them quite the go-getter and steadfast in their conviction. Take for example Zhao Min. She's the one who went after ZWJ and even when ZWJ thought wrongly of her, she didn't give up on him. She looked for proof to prove her innocence and even snatched ZWJ from ZZR on their wedding day. It annoys me a bit that she threw everything away for ZWJ including her birth family (her father loves her so much and she used this love against her father to save ZWJ), but, can't say she's wimpy.

I haven't read any of Sima Ling's work, but I heard that his heroines are also pretty strong and capable. Not over-powered that WLS's heroines, but, still strong.
