i finally took the plunge and tried out some k-dramas. i've resisted for years because i really, really hate subtitles. i still do, but i'm starting to adjust. the handful of k-dramas i've watched have left a very disquieting feeling: i thought that the streak of anti-feminism running along the hollywood and hollywood-esque productions (films/tv series) was bad, but it's nothing compared to the blatant misogyny found in k-dramas--and perpetrated by both sexes! this is really not the right stuff to brainwash impressionable young girls with. the reviews and comments i've skimmed online seem to ignore the problem entirely, but, of course, this is the english-speaking audience's viewpoint. i wonder how the korean women react to the misogyny. can anyone tell me if korean women are aware of this issue? are the mothers teaching their daughters properly about self-respect and independence and that the sky's the limit? or are they spoon-feeding the same crap about needing a man, needing to be married before age 30, needing to stay beautiful and youthful, etc.? South Korea is a very patriarchal country even though women's status has improved of late. So, maybe what portrayed in the series is actually more feminist than reality already. So, how could the korean women be 'aware' when it's actually the norm and accepted view of society? well, i know they're making a huge push to learn english and be part of the global market. so, all things western is the rage. i'd assume they'd have some exposure to western concepts of equality. of course, i suppose the government can do what china does and restrict what information is being made available to the populace.

It's almost Mid Autumn. And as part of tradition....I think chefying should post more on his mooncake this year Lotus seed prices went up sky high this year. I just bought a kilo to practice on (I make this only once a year) and I was horrified by the price. It used to cost me MYR18.00 (USD4.50) per kg, but now the price is MYR30.00 (USD7.50). The jump is 66% ! I have not decided how much mooncakes to make. Maybe more of the red bean paste and less of the lotus paste! Anything to cut costs

any idea why the lotus seed price went up 66%? 66% is a big number though!! The government imposed a 6% Goods and Services Tax (a consumption tax - China's is 17%) and that hit prices of goods a lot. However, I am not too sure if this was the reason for the increase of lotus seed prices by 66%. I heard from the seller that this year's harvest of lotus seeds was low. In addition, with the weak Ringgit (that's the Malaysian Currency), imported goods are bound to be more expensive. The Ringgit had weakened by some 20% this year alone. I am inclined to think that it is a combination of all these factors that caused the increase in the price of the lotus seeds.

It's almost Mid Autumn. And as part of tradition....I think chefying should post more on his mooncake this year So the sacrifice of the lotus seeds started. I bought 1 kg of the dried lotus seeds, cleaned and skinned them and removed the bitter stem. I then boiled them until soft, ready to be mashed and cooked into a paste. That was Saturday - took me quite a few hours to do just that. On Sunday, I was supposed to cooked the lotus paste. However, I ended up with some friends on a durian hunting and eating excursion. I was dead tired when I got back home. Today, I decided to cook the lotus paste. Unfortunately, the lotus seeds had all gone bad, so I threw them all away. Well, a thin layer of mould had started to grow on the water in which soaked the lotus seeds. I did not want to take a chance, so they had to be thrown away. Back to square one...

I froze some durians in my freezer. when I had them thawed there was no deterioration in taste, texture nor flavour - it was pungent as ever! I still have one box in my freezer. Maybe I should have it thawed and eaten next week.

Trust me!! it's really awesome. They don't put too much sugar, the sweet is natural, with durian flavor, plus it has savory taste from the salted eggyolk. You should try! Anyway...talking about mooncake, I'm busy making my mooncake cookies I'm not an expert though. I still have to learn from Chefying for it

I don't quite know how/where to place this, so I guess this is as good a place as any. Some of you may be familiar with this poem by Li Bai:- 床前明月光 疑是地上霜 举头望明月 低头思故乡 The long and short of the poem is that: The composer was in bed 床, and before 前 the bed was the bright 明 moon light 月光. He suspected 疑是 /thought the light came from the reflection of the frost 霜 on the ground 地上 Lifting 举 his head 头, he gazed 望 at the bright moon 明月 Lowering 低 his head 头, he thought 思 of his village 故乡 This poem is supposed to reflect the life of one who is away from home, melancholic that he is unable to be with loved ones during mooncake/harvest festival. My quirky interpretation had always been that the author was an alien, because he looked at the celestial body and wanted to go home (I was inspired by ET). This following interpretation was much better than mine. Before the composer was in bed 床前 was a girl, Bright Moon 明月, stripped naked 光. Her skin was so bright, it was like 疑是 the frost 霜 on the ground 地上 Lifting his head 举头, the composer gazed 望 at the Bright Moon 明月 Lowering 低 his head 头, he thought 思 of his wife back home 故乡 The interpretation was that the poem reflected the feelings of the composer, Li Bai, as he sought the company of a prostitute while he was far away from home. And I thought I was the creative one!

Btw, I just returned from my vacation in Sichuan (Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, and Emei Shan). Then the tour guide mentioned that Li Bai was a not a pure Han. He's originally from Kazhakstan. Interesting fact indeed!

Interesting fact indeed! well, the ruling family of the tang weren't pure han either. just goes to show how "important" ethnicity is.
