Chinese illustrator sends Marvel’s Avengers to the Far East and across the sea
Many fans exercise their imagination and expand the possibilities of their fandoms with crossover fan art. We’ve seen some fantastic illustrations experimenting with art styles as well, re-imagining Game of Thrones characters in Disney animation style, and some of our favorite fairy tales revamped with a Korean twist.
Speaking of which, check out this East-meets-West mashup depicting the superheroes from the Marvel franchise as the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythology!
The Eight Immortals (八仙 bā xiān in Chinese) are a group from Chinese mythology and a popular theme in Chinese culture, literature and art, with their legendary stories often adapted for Chinese opera, movies and television drama serials. They are also seen as icons of longevity and prosperity, and are often seen as statues and sculptures that decorate temples, tourism spots and even many people’s homes.
Each with their own iconic magical instruments, one of the most popular adaptations of their mythical adventures is Bā Xiān Guò Hǎi (八仙過海), a tale where the eight deities head to a celestial gathering by using their powers to cross the sea instead of riding on their usual means of transport, magical clouds.
Illustrated by Chinese Weibo user Xia-a (xia1205), this crossover painting features the stars of the Avengers as the Eight Immortals crossing the ocean, with a little bonus in the back! Check out the zoom-in cuts below to see the intricate details!
Captain America as Zhang Guolao
Zhang Guolao is commonly depicted riding on a mule and carrying a tubular bamboo drum with two iron mallets in it. In Xia-a’s version, Captain America carries his trusty shield in one hand and a bamboo drum in his other arm, with an extra back-scratcher stowed in his bamboo drum. Even superheroes get itchy at times it seems.
Hawkeye as Lan Caihe, Black Widow as He Xiangu
Lan Caihe is usually seen as a young boy/girl dressed in gender-ambiguous clothing and carrying a flower basket. Hawkeye is too cool for flowers, so he’s carrying a stylish tote bag. He’s not without his bow and arrows, of course. He Xiangu is the only female among the Eight Immortals, as Black Widow is among the Avengers. She is often seen with lotus flowers.
The Hulk as Cao Guojiu
Cao Guojiu is believed to be the youngest of the group, and is usually dressed in an official’s court robe, holding a jade tablet. Dear Hulk, you are not supposed to snack on your magical instrument…
Iron Man as Lü Dongbin
The most popular and well-known among the eight, Lü Dongbin is known as the scholarly ladies man with a bit of a love for drinking. His choice of weapon is a sword which he usually carries on his back.
Loki as Li Tieguai
Li Tieguai is often depicted as a beggar-like old man with unkempt hair and a messy beard. He walks with the help of an iron crutch, which is probably how his name Tieguai, which literally means “iron crutch”, came about. His iconic magical tool is a gourd which contains medicine which he uses to help the weak and needy.
Nick Fury as Han Zhongli (also known as Zhongli Quan)
The jolly drinker of the eight, Han Zhongli is commonly portrayed as a bearded man holding a large magical fan, with his chest and wine belly exposed from his robe. Nick Fury needs to work on getting that belly, though.
Thor as Han Xiangzi
Han Xiangzi is said to have studied Taoism under Lü Dongbin. Also often depicted with a scholarly disposition, Han Xiangzi is always seen with his magical flute, which bears the power to give life. In this crossover piece, Thor’s mighty hammer becomes a surfboard for him.
▼ Bonus appearance! Did you notice Spidey back there?
One’s a collection of Western superhero comics while the other is Chinese mythology with roots that date back centuries, but somehow their characters intersect rather nicely, don’t you think?
