A few good things did come out of his reign. As least, he united the writing of Chinese characters. It is difficult enough as it is, imagine having to learn write at least 4 other different squiggles for a single Chinese character!

It is difficult enough as it is, imagine having to learn write at least 4 other different squiggles for a single Chinese character! oh, i don't revile him like a lot of historians did. his standardization of not just the language but of measurements alone is enough for posterity. and despite his sense of invincibility, he didn't use his own body as the basis of length and weight, unlike some other monarch, resulting in a nonsensical system of measurements. *rolleyes* |

a rare talent, sam hui is equally well-known for his working class/social conscience songs and his more poetic ones. here are two examples of the latter. he readily admits that he often borrows lines of poetry from the 300 Tang Poems and compilations of Song Prose. his parents were involved in cantopera and he grew up appreciating both chinese poetry and cantopera lyrics, so he often drew from these sources when composing.

and i should note that sam hui's working class songs are the exceptions to my general inclination of needing to like melody and lyrics equally well to really appreciate the lyrics. because most of his songs of this genre are basically words with some music accompaniment, it's the lyrics that matter.
