reviving this thread! the following is a relatively new song for me (i.e., i discovered it years after it came into existence).
and i really, really love this rendition:

there have been several adaptations of dreams of the red chamber 紅樓夢, so there've been different songs for lin daiyu and her melancholy. this is my favourite version.
and, of course, those lyrics are a condensation of the original verses by cao xueqin (which are rather beyond my level of comprehension):

The music/singing itself failed to show the beauty of the lyrics imho.

it's so good to see you, @caiyi! that's interesting that you think the lyrics more beautiful in canto! cao xueqin was born and raised in beijing, so mandarin was his mother tongue, and he wrote several mando-specific puns into his story.

Well, my mother tongue is Cantonese. So everything sounds more beautiful in Cantonese, except maybe some names. Ah Ke is certainly nicer sounding than Ah Oh. I most probably will miss all the puns if I read the novel. But, the rendition of the song also affect my feelings. This version sounds a lot better.

agreed that feng feifei's version is very soothing. here she is singing the song with fei yu-ching (pity about the dialogue): and yeah, just by the name "ah ke" alone, you know JY is mando-speaking. i remember finding proof in his writing that LYS was canto-speaking.

stumbled on this song by chance--see, when lam tsik isn't trying to be complex, there's such beauty in the simplicity of words!
and sandy lam is in a league of her own right now--wow!

I don't know what is in this song, but eveyrbody is crying !! the song is a very emotional one. the singer is addressing "my dearest one"--it can be someone who is far away and there's no communication or an ex, there's a bit of room for interpretation--and telling this person that things are going well and that the singer hopes this person is also well.

ok, reinafu , this is my poor attempt to translate the lyrics: 我最親愛的 "My Dearest One" 作詞:林夕 lyrics: Albert Leung 作曲:Russell Harris (composer) 製作:JimLee、張惠妹 (producers) 很想知道你近況 我聽人説還不如你對我講 Really want to know how you've been; I've heard from others but why don't you tell me yourself 經過那段遺憾 請你放心 我變得更加堅強 After that period of regret, please don't worry, I've become stronger 世界不管怎樣荒涼 愛過你就不怕孤單 No matter life's desolations, I don't fear loneliness after having loved you 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像過去一樣 Here's a kiss, as I used to give 我想你一定喜歡 現在的我學會了你最愛的開朗 You'll be happy to know that the me of today has become as cheerful as you hoped 想起你的模樣 有什麼錯 還不能夠被原諒 Thinking of your paradigm that no wrong is too impossible to forgive 世界不管怎樣荒涼 愛過你就不怕孤單 No matter life's desolations, I don't fear loneliness after having loved you 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像朋友一樣 Here's a kiss, as a friend would give 雖然離開了你的時間 比一起還漫長 我們總能補償 Although our time apart has exceeded our time together, we can make up for it 因為中間空白的時光 如果還能分享 也是一種浪漫 We can share in this common space-time, deem it a sort of romance 關係雖然不再一樣 關心卻怎麼能說斷就斷 Our relationship may not be the same, but the caring doesn't just end 我最親愛的 你過的怎麼樣 My dearest one, how are you 沒我的日子 你別來無恙 Without me by your side, is all well 依然親愛的 我沒讓你失望 Still beloved one, I haven't disappointed you 讓我親一親 像親人一樣 Here's a kiss, as a loved one might give

I notice that for minnan-hua (Fujian dialect), sometimes the choices of words is different between Mandarin (putonghua) and Minnan-hua. I wonder if that's the case too for Cantonese. Please enlightened me to know how homographs work. Thank you!

Please enlightened me to know how homographs work. Thank you! yes, when i actually know how to pronounce the word. and yes, choice of vocabulary in canto sometimes differs from mando. for example, greeting someone in mando, you'd say, "ni hao". canto speakers not from hong kong (who would say "hallo" after the british influence) generally say, "sik zoh faan mei" (have you eaten").

"In the Lonesome Wind", by Wubai, in Hokkien. Main theme for the puppet film "Legend of the Sacred Stones". The melody is radically different from Hokkien songs.

yenchin thanks for the Hokkien song. Listening to Hokkien songs always reminds me of my grandpa and father. The language is very familiar for me although I could only pronounce less than 20 words of Hokkien, can't even pronounce my name correctly in it
