Hello ,i have a question ,is all Gu Long hero and novel only based from Ming Dynasty and no other dynasty? Do this mean popular hero like Luk Siu Fung ,Chor Lau Heung ,Siew Sap Yat Long ,Fung Hang Suet , etc are from Ming dynasty and not other dynasty? No hero from Tang,Sung ,Yuan ,Qing dynasty etc?
Thanks.

I don't think Gu Long ever specifies a dynasty, does he?

Yep. I think Gu Long's novel never specify any time or era. But I guess in films the producers and directors tend to choose Ming dynasty because the clothing and hair style are much better than any other dynasties.

I think it was smart of Gu Long not to specify a time in his books. It probably makes it easier to adapt to a film or TV series.

yeah, dynasties are left very vague, although there are hints that LXF, at least, is almost definitely set in the ming. ironically, it is a specific reference to a historical japanese figure that confirms it. and, well, the fact that the duel of the century takes place in the forbidden city, which was built by the ming emperors--beijing only became the capital for the ming and qing dynasties. previously, it was elsewhere, depending on the dynasty. i also suspect, though i don't have proof, that GL was influenced by movies like dragon gate inn, which was definitely set in the ming dynasty.

It is definitely set during the Ming Dynasty. Because the government during the Ming Dynasty is extremely loose. (when you got don't care Emperors, bandits, robbers and fighters abound).
Some clues: References are made to the 紫金城 and the later generations of wudang sect (which is found by Zhang Sanfeng).
Cannot be Tang Dynasty because the common people are not allowed to have silver or gold.
May be the Song Dynasty as it is the richest Chinese Empire ever. But the Song Emperors are smarter, they made their capital in the middle of the Middle Kingdom and have tight control over the military. But precisely the central government is too strong, it hard for pugilists to thrive.
Only the Ming Dynasty where you can have people that dare to rise to plot against the Emperors and there are numerous mentions of 王爷, which mean that they are likely kin to the Emperors and have feudal control over their respective areas.
