Pig character disappears off KL billboard for HK film
The character of a pig has disappeared off billboard in Kuala Lumpur advertising the Hong Kong action fantasy film ‘Journey to the West – The Monkey King 2’ due to be screened come Chinese New Year. The original poster of the film, by a China and Hong Kong production house, showed the monk Tang Sanzang and his disciples Monkey King Sun Wukong, Sha Wujiang and Zhu Bajie. Zhu Bajie, which is part human and part pig, is pictured on the right of the Monkey King in the poster but is missing on a billboard erected on Jalan Loke Yew.
Zhu Bajie was equally absent from the poster in the official websites of major cinema chains Golden Screen Cinemas and TGV Cinemas. Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, tells the story of a monk who traveled to the Western Regions to obtain sacred texts with three disciples. The film ‘Journey to the West-The Monkey King 2’ is based on this novel and and focuses on the White-Bone Demon who kidnaps the monk because it desires to eat the monk’s flesh. The star-studded production features top Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok as the Monkey King, China film star Feng Shao Feng as the monk, Hong Kong star Him Law as Sha Wujing, and China comedian Xiao Shen Yang as Zhu Bajie.
Films screened in Malaysia have to go through vetting by the Film Censorship Board, under the purview of the Home Ministry. Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed told Malaysiakini that the censorship board will make a decision “in the best interest of the country not the movie producer”. "I think it must be because the movie did not follow the guidelines of the censorship board. “Anyway it is too trivial an issue to comment on," Nur Jazlan said.
The disappearance of Zhu Bajie from the film billboard comes after a city council in Penang removed a playground ride because it resembled a pig. Pigs are non-halal for Muslims who are forbidden to eat pig products and must conduct ritual cleansing if they come in contact with a pig. A finding of porcine DNA in Cadbury chocolate product sparked a boycott, but later tests found the product to be halal. Cases of measles also spiked after parents opted out of vaccinating their children, among others for fear of pig products in vaccines. The Health Ministry says the fears are unfounded. The government last year proposed mandating supermarkets to differentiate trolleys used for non-halal products, including pork which is usually sold in a separate section of the stores. The proposal was met with uproar online, but both Muslim and non-Muslim shoppers at supermarkets which already do this told Malaysiakini that they welcome the move. -Mkini
