The famous sci-fi writer Ni Kuang (倪匡) is also a prolific writer of wuxia novels. He writes them under the pseudonym of Wisely (衛斯理).
Has anyone read any of Ni Kuang's wuxia novels? Any recommendations? Which are the more famous ones?
I've read a very slim novel of his from the library, entitled Twin Toxins of Xuanwu (玄武雙毒). It is really more like a novella. It has a femme fatale, but the situations and the plot are rather stock. In my opinion this novella cannot really compare with any by Gu Long, Wang Dulu or Jin Yong.
Yet I am wary of dismissing an author based on one slim novel. Are there any better, more famous novels which you have read? I have heard of the Six Fingered Qin Demon (六指琴魔) but not much else.
Any input would be much appreciated.

i think i've only read 2 or 3 of his short novels, so i don't think i can really give an informed opinion of his works nor make suggestions. it's funny, i thought we had a list of his novels posted! i'm going to see if i can dig up a list from the old forums.
i think his six-fingered demon story is his most well-known one. haven't read it, though.

Thanks for your input. If you can remember the short novels you have read, then all the better!
Apparently the Six Fingered Qin Demon was made into a movie thrice, and TV series twice. Wong Jing appears to be preparing for a new movie version.

I was about to ask if the Shaws' hadn't adapted some of his novels into movies, but then I saw your list and I think that at least "one armed sabre" and "new one-armed sabre " might be the source of the One-Armed Swordsman trilogy, right ?
Also, " One sword startles in eight direction " might be the source for TVB " One sword " and ATV " Spirit of the sword ", right ?
And the Chinese title for Thirteenth taibao looks like the CHinese title for TVB The wild bunch, unless I'm mistaken...

yes, i think shaw bros did adapt a few of NK's fics--whether the movies came first or the books, i'm not certain. i checked quickly, and NK is credited as one of the screenwriters for One Armed Swordsman, so that's one adapation for sure. and yes, The Wild Bunch (shi san taibao) is another one of his. i read the book, and it matches the movie.
ATV's "spirit of the sword" is the adaptation of GL's wan hua xi jian lu, so not NK's.
according to spcnet, TVB's "one sword" is "This rather excellent but unoriginal wuxia serial was shamelessly plagiarised off two wuxia stories - Gu Long's Wan Hua Xi Jian Lu ("WHXJL"), and Jin Yong's Xiao Ao Jiang Hu ("XAJH")."

Ni Kuang was a prolific scriptwriter for Shaw Brothers. Many scripts of Shaw Brothers movies were written by him be it adaptation or original story. So, there is a possibility that the script came first and the book came later like 'Reincarnated'.

Ni Kuang helped to cover for Jin Yong for some parts of his novels that were being serialised in the newspapers. Jin Yong had to take time off and Ni Kuang filled in to ensure that the weekly column continued churning out content for the hungry readers.

Sometimes in thje ending credits of Shaws' movies, it's mentioned Ni Kuang, and sometimes I Kuang. I guess that these are two different authors ?

Ni Kuang was so prolific, someone once estimated he wrote hundreds of wuxia novels. Between writing scripts and writing fiction and ghostwriting, goodness knows how much time he had for anything else.

RIP. It seems he had skin cancer and didn't want to go for treatment at his age.
