Ling Jiefang (Chinese: 凌解放; 3 November 1945 – 15 December 2018), better known by his pen name Eryue He (Chinese: 二月河; literally: "February River"), was a Chinese historical fiction writer. He is best known for writing biographical novels of three Qing dynasty emperors (Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong)
He was the dean of College of Liberal Arts of Zhengzhou University and a member of the China Writers Association.
His works: Kangxi Emperor 康熙大帝(1984–1988), adapted into the 2001 TV series Kangxi Dynasty Yongzheng Emperor 雍正皇帝(1990–1992), adapted into the 1997 TV series Yongzheng Dynasty Qianlong Emperor 乾隆皇帝(1994–1996), adapted into the 2002 TV series Qianlong Dynasty Hu Xueyan (胡雪岩, wrote with Xue Jiazhu) Meditation in front of Buddha Statue (佛像前的沉吟) Miyun Buyu (密云不雨, autobiography) Ren Jian Shi (人间世, essay) and Suixing Suiyuan (随性随缘, essay), their essays most repeated.
His inspiration for the emperor biographies came from his study of Dream of the Red Mansion, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.[citation needed] He is also a member of the standing committee of the Chinese Redology Association, with a group of people devoting time and effort on the study of Dream of the Red Mansion。

He just passed away two days ago I read his novels about Kangxi and Yongzheng. Watched the adaptation series of his novels on TV. The books are much better than the adaptation, but the series itself was pretty good, especially the series about Yongzheng and Hu Xueyan. He's a serious writer, in which means he made a serious historical study on what he wrote. Although it's a historical fiction, and some of course is a fiction and not accurate, but overall it's still pretty good.

RIP!
so, according to his stories: - who was kangxi's intended heir? - did yongzheng lose his head? if so, who cut it off? - who fathered qianlong?
these tend to be the most controversial points from these three lives.

RIP! so, according to his stories: - who was kangxi's intended heir? - did yongzheng lose his head? if so, who cut it off? - who fathered qianlong? these tend to be the most controversial points from these three lives. I haven't finished Yongzheng novel so I don't know if he lose his head or not. But for Kangxi, I really like Kangxi, so not only historical novels, I also bought and read history books about Kangxi. To answer your question: Kangxi really passed his throne to Yongzheng. He had reasons for this. Kangxi loved his second son so much, Yinreng who was born from his empress. The empress died when she gave birth Yinreng. Although it's not specifically mentioned, but apparently Kangxi really loved this empress so much. Therefore after the empress died, Kangxi took Yinreng under his own care. He spent time to educate Yinreng by himself, instead of just throw the responsibility to the imperial teachers. And Yinreng was pretty good in the beginning. While Yongzheng ( 4th Prince aka. Yinzhen) was a moody guy. There was a time when he got depressed, and Kangxi later brought him under his care on his palace. Yinreng, when he grew older, then he got bad influence. From Kangxi's diary, it's pretty much written that he's a bisexual and pedophile. And he often bought young boys, and abused them to death for his pervert sexual conduct. Therefore Kangxi was really displeased with his son which was not a virtuous man. He observed Yinreng and he didn't get any better. Then Yinreng with the help of his uncle, plotted a coup to get the throne. Kangxi then demoted him. BUT, then there's an evidence that the oldest son used black magic to harm Yinreng. Therefore Kangxi thought that all of Yinreng misconduct was because of the black magic influence (This black magic thing was depicted in Dynasty Series). To make the story short, Yinreng didn't repent and didn't change. Meanwhile, Kangxi's health became deteriorate (he mentioned in his diary that his sadness because of Yinreng caused his health deteriorated so fast). And as grew older, he didn't have much energy to fight corruptions. And he saw that this Yinzhen was the only son who worked as hard as him, and had the lifestyle similar to him. It's said that Kangxi, and Yongzheng, were simple men, and didn't really care for luxurious things in life. Therefore after observing Yinzhen for years, he decided to pass the throne to Yinzhen. In his valedictory, Kangxi wrote all the reasons why he later despised Yinreng and chose Yinzhen. And for the edict, Qing Dynasty's edict was written in three languages, Chinese, Mongolian, and Manchurian. Therefore it's impossible to change the will - as if it's often depicted on the series and urban legends. reading Kangxi valedictory makes me love Kangxi more and more. he's really one of the greatest emperors among more than 300 Chinese emperors. for question no. 3 : Yongzheng HAD an older son. Therefore the story about he and his wife changed their baby daughter to Chen Kelao's son is pretty odd.

Lu Si Niang so far from what I see was a myth which seemed to have been created in the late Ching Dynasty.
The part where she becomes Yong Zheng's girlfried seemed to start from Legend of YungChing (TTV, 1997), and was further populated in The King Of Yesterday And Tomorrow (TVB, 2003). Before that it was just hate, vengeance, and at best, pretending to be a concubine to get close to Yong Zheng (which, according to some internet articles, was something impossible in the Ching Dynasty).

anyway...I'm posting the story of 康熙大帝 in the forum. Enjoy it! And if you're so kind, and provide a summary in English for non Chinese speaker, that would be awesome too.
I really recommend the book though. Although partly is a fiction, but it catches the spirit of historical Kangxi. Just like Jin Yong also catches the spirit of Kangxi on his novel.
