Watch this drama on this link This is TVB Cantonese version www.on9drama.com/hk-drama/Admin, yes ,my mother said this is best mainland drama ,i have yet watched as i have no time ,can you write a review on it? Wow. you should watch it. really, it's worth to watch. The story is about Lin Shu, a son of General Lin who was a brother in law of the Emperor. General Lin and his son, together with the young crown Prince was charge by some corrupt ministers for treason. The crown prince was executed. General Lin and Lin Shu who was just win the war planned to return from the frontier. But then the decree came to them, and another imperial troops slaughtered General Lin, Lin Shu and their 70,000 soldiers. Lin Shu fell from the cliff. He didn't die, but he was bitten by poisonous creature (I forgot exactly..but if I'm not mistaken it's an ice worm). He later was saved by the master of Langya Hall. Langya Hall was a kind of a secret society who provide ranks and lists of the "most" peoples at that time. Most beautiful women, most talented pugilists, the best sword skills, etc. And basically Langya Hall knows all a lot of secret in the world, and willing to sell the info for a large sum of money. The master of Langya Hall managed to prolong Lin Shu's life for ten years. With the poison effects, the energetic Lin Shu became an ill weak man, and more than that, his face was changed. Actually...he changed and be more handsome for his case. LOL. Later Lin Shu who now was known as Mei ChangShu befriended with a son of a prominent minister in the capital, and that's how Mei Changshu could approached and befriended with the peoples from Emperor's circle. Including his fiancee (played by Liu Tao) and the Ninth Prince. Mei Changshu plan was to make the emperor admitted his mistake and clear his and his father's name, together with their 70,000 innocent soldiers who were unfairly slaughtered. And that plan was so smooth, and well planned, including get ridding the appointed crown prince, and made the Ninth Prince became the crown prince. The series pace is good, not too fast, but not too slow. The actors' acting is awesome, the setting, music, etc are all good. Seriously, this is the best mainland ancient drama for years!

This series had just come to be screen on the TV station where I am. I watched the first 4 episodes, and I find it fascinating.
The TV series set it in the Liang Dynasty, and the dialogue is quite complicated - the speech is more towards older Chinese than modern. The spoken exchanges is much richer than what I see on TVB.

finally got around to watching this series. the premise is good. there are definite parallels with The Count of Monte Cristo. alas, because of the inspiration, the ending falls flat. there's such build up... to a disappointing climax--or rather, anti-climax. the confrontation would have been more effective during the annual ritual to the heavens (and yes, i realize that events would have to be readjusted so that jingyan was made crown prince by then, instead of later on in canonical timeline).
it's weird that we never saw a close-up of the actor who plays the young lin shu--only the actress who plays the young mu nihuang. anyone know why?

It seems destiny that I watch this TV series , there are too many positive reviews to ignore. I watched a few minutes on YouTube and really like the cinematography and colors, not something I usually notice in contemporary TV series.

Hohoho.... and apparently everyone who watches it, like it! Guess what, this series is based on a web novel series, written by (back then) Hai Yan - an ordinary property agent woman. There are so many popular web novels adapted into series, in recent years. But I have to say, many of them although very popular and entertaining, but in terms of literature or historical background, are very low in quality. Many of those writers don't even do the research properly. Nirvana in Fire is one of the best, because the author masters the ancient language, and she even made the poems by herself. Actually only in the series adaptation that they have to make the setting into the Liang Dynasty. In the novel, it's not specified which era or which kingdom. And the setting of the Liang Dynasty actually creates a little bit of flaw in this series, because, in Liang Dynasty, they haven't invented gunpowder.

I have watched the whole series now. I liked it very much. I don't know if I should be embarrassed to confess that I binge watched the whole series in two days.
I prefer this original series to its "sequel".
