This series, based on the novel of the same name by Ma Boyong, is kind of marketed as the "24" of Tang Dynasty, but unlike "24", events in the show aren't followed in real time. I'm currently on episode 6 and only 3 hours have passed in the show. The main story is about an ex-law enforcer prisoner, Zhang Xiaojing, who, by "Big Documentation" (the author's version of Big Data) is chosen to investigate a crime, which turns out to involve a conspiracy and power struggle in the imperial court. With hindsight from history, it seems that the story provides a sense of the beginning of the end of the great days of the Tang Empire. So far the attention to detail on the recreation of Chang'An makes the whole visuals quite believable. A lot of the dialogue is in Classical Chinese, which was kind of repelling to me (it sounds snobbish, probably due to my impression of it from harem drama), though I eventually got used to in around Episode 3. Additionally, there are some author creations, such as the aforementioned "Big Documentation" (which I personally think is just treating Big Data as a technobabble BS buzzword since as of Episode 5 the uses of it seem to only involve picking out the main character, comparing name lists, and the expert reciting embarrassing events to embarrass imperial guards.) I'll kind of follow up while watching. Oh and Djimon Hounsou's name continues to show in the opening credits. Though so far I haven't seen him.

I've heard about this TV series. It has quite a following in China now, especially for a TV series not based on stereotypical repetitive plots.
Some audience praised the authenticity of the sets, the period details etc.
It is one of the sleeper hits of 2019. I am not really a TV series guy, but given the chance, I might try to follow it.

since there's a proper thread for this series. i thought it only right to leave a review here. as i'd mentioned elsewhere, i finished watching this recently. worth watching. the suspense is good, the plot intricate, the characters' motivations interesting. the ending seems a little... boring after all the drama and chasing-across-the-city. i skimmed the book ending, and the series actually gives a more definite tying up of loose ends.
the set design is fantastic, worth watching just to see it from all angles!
interestingly, the source material was written by the same author whose other book was adapted as Luoyang. that production also featured an elaborate set, though i didn't find the storyline nearly as interesting as this one.
