this zhou botong: I like his other roles but I can never see him as a funny Zhou Botong. He looks too young to play Zhou Botong, almost wrinkle-free. Or is Zhou Botong quite young in LOCH?

I hope no one reading this thread will feel too offended. I don't think Ding Guansen's acting skill is bad and Jia Qing is probably only bad (to me) in this one role. The director must take much of the blame. As for the others, when they're miscast, it's not their fault. I say this because Zhang Meng admitted she went for a nose job because she lacked confidence after being cast as Wang Yuyan (her former boyfriend also criticized her as not being pretty enough ). After being bombarded by netizens, she decided to make her nose bridge higher. I'm sure Admin simply meant she was miscast. Being cast in a JY drama is often a double-edged sword. Zhang Meng has wisely chosen to remove that plastic in her nose. I really don't know who to blame: netizens, the director, or JY? Much safer to be in a LYS adaptation. And recently, there seems to be plenty of age-shaming online and on certain variety shows. While browsing for this thread, Gallen Lo, Nicky Wu, Cecilia Yip, Tony Leung, Wallace Chung have all been age shamed... this is only a selected list. If you don't like crow's feet and actors to age, please feel free to unlike them from your personal list. You're most welcome to.

Does anyone think the 2013 Xiao Ao elders don't look like elders? (some clips from both 1996 and 2013 SPW) I find that Yue Bu Qun,his wife and Mo Da don't look like aged martial artists.Zuo Leng Zan could pass of as late 30s. Now Tian Ba Guong, that one definitely looks like he could be LHC's brother!(From other adaptations,he looked to be someone many time older than LHC, haven't checked the novel for his age though.)
Added:Just read kyc's recent post. Just to let people know, I'm not age-shaming(not that kyc was aiming that at me anyway) the SPW 2013 elder characters. Just wanting to state something I kept in my mind for too long. Because the Zuo Leng Can previously played Lin Chong in Water Margin and the Yue Bu Qun actor played many heroic roles in past Taiwanese series(if I got the person right)

To me, they look too young for the roles too. Saying someone's too old for the role is not age-shaming. Everyone grows old someday.

5. Ding Guansen's Linghu Chong (2018) --》 I didnt watch the series, but the look itself is enough to prevent me from watching. Maybe more suitable to play post-Pixie Lin Ping Zhi. LOL....agree with you!!

I like Zhang Meng as Shuang-er in DoMD 2014 with Han Dong. I would say, being WYY or other characters - is not only about the look, but the spirit/ character, and aura that should be there. It's true that WYY has to be beautiful, and in terms of look, ZM is okay to be WYY even without the nose job. But she's just not suitable to be WYY. Having Zhang Meng as WYY, is like casting Carmen Lee or LYF as Princess Jian Ning of DoMD...it's just miscast. HR of LoCH 2018, was bullied by netizen because of her plastic look. But I personally think she's okay, and she's good enough to portray HR as she has the witty, naughty and smart look to be HR. So again, it's not about the look.

siuyiu, the case with Lawrence Ng is partly because I prefer Tony Leung's Zhang Wuji. I remember Lawrence Ng being very earnest as ZWJ, but overall, it's another case of me preferring a 1980s TVB series over the remake. I actually felt for Kitty Lai's Zhao Min (she's really pretty), a character I did not feel for when I read the book. And Charmaine Sheh's Zhou Zhiruo is not noticeably better (or worse) than Sheren Tang's. Tony Leung is still the best ZWJ for me: the dazed look in his eyes, good-looking but with looks never over-emphasized. soengyee, Ah Ke is again one of those "so pretty that she's near impossible to cast" JY characters. I don't remember the 1984 female cast well, but I do remember the Shuang'er, Carina Lau and Sandra Ng. The last because Ms. Ng had done a lot of molei tau acting when I first watched the series, and she plays the character really straight, which is kind of hilarious in itself. By 2000 Athena Chu had lost a bit of freshness: maybe she swam too much, overworked, or maybe it was because of a failed relationship, who knows. And yes, she was too tanned. But the 2000 adaptation was produced by Wong Jing. (As an aside, I think she now looks good again. ) Admin, strangely, JY liked Steve Ma's Zhang Wuji. This is another occasion where I do not agree with the author: I find Steve Ma's ZWJ too longwinded. But I admit I didn't really follow the series. As for Cecilia Yip (his Zhao Min), I agree she was miscast, but a lot of Taiwanese audiences loved her portrayal (maybe their love has migrated to Ady An, who was surely better cast in 2009.) Cecilia Yip is an excellent actress, but she's never the glamorous type and her beauty and charisma aren't the "skin deep" kind. She's another of Young Pei-pei's "creative casting", partly because she was popular on the island. As for the 2003 Murong Fu, everyone after Shek Sau has been hopelessly outclassed. Wow! I just knew that JY liked Steve Ma's ZWJ. I honestly think in term of look, Steve Ma was a good choice for ZWJ. But his acting...he's always over-acting in some scenes. Until now I still remember some of his over-acting scene of ZWJ and ZM -- even after more than twenty years. LOL. Btw, my concern with Lawrence Ng as ZWJ is because he used to play as bad guys (Sui Yangdi, and even the notorious Sex and Zen, etc), and suddenly he's ZWJ? Oh nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

kyc to each their own! and yes, wayne lai was not only too young to play ZBT, he failed to play him convincingly--just made him silly. i hope i don't come off as defensive, but i just wanted to clarify that i wasn't age-shaming lawrence ng re: ZWJ. it's the most common criticism towards casting him, and i'm merely acknowledging that, objectively, he was old to be playing the part--he was 40 and playing a 20-something (?) year-old character. but i liked his portrayal despite this. patrina fung was way old to be playing empress wu when she was age 15, but patrina made it convincing. for me, so long as the portrayal is convincing, neither age nor looks matter much. (there were negative comments about chun wong being too fat to play zhou botong, but i personally think his portrayal is the best of the best.)

Saying someone is too old for a role is not age-shaming - not to me anyway. Everyone on this forum is pretty safe. Saying someone's old, fat and ugly is. And posting screenshots of an aging actor or actress highlighting certain parts of his or her face / body. I know this upsets certain people, like Cecilia Yip. And I don't understand why such programmes are allowed where they subject their looks to such scrutiny. Nowadays, young fans are so hopelessly immature.

I may have a thing for Tony Leung... I prefer his ZWJ and Wei Xiaobao.
As for Steve Ma, he has a declamatory and sometimes hysterical way of acting from his Chiung Yao days. The only series I can stand of him happens to be the Singapore drama where he plays Lv Dongbin the immortal.

I have a new nomination. I think this one pretty well sums up what's wrong with recent JY productions.
Joseph Zeng's Zhang Wuji.
I watched two episodes at first. My first thought was: is this guy from some boy band? Surely enough, he is.
In fact, there's a lot wrong with the 2019 HSDS.

Another nomination: Zhang Tielin's Yang Xiao Walked in from the wrong drama series... LOL, and those who watched it would question if Ji Xiaofu was so blind that she left a young good looking Wudang swordsman to be with an old-age uncle with big stomach. LOL
