I dunno much about it except that I first saw it in The Secret Rivals 2. And then many years later I saw it in The Righteous Fists. I could read some of the Chinese subs and understand that section of the dialogue and recognized the weapon used by one of the female characters was called the Emei sting. And today out of curiosity I did a search on it and found this.
(Forgot to mention, the 5th stance of Dugu 9 sword called Mace-breaking stance lists the Emei sting as one of the weapons this stance was made to counter)

After this,I couldn't get any other search results other than those related with the Age of Wushu game. Perhaps the Chinese characters will give better search results.
(Yeah, the Chinese characters have better search results.I found the link that I have included here)

There are also some versions that have blunt ends that are used to strike people. Originally my impression came from the illustration in The Deer and the Cauldron and I thought that it was just a dagger, shaped like an eyebrow. Later there was this show on National Geographic about martial arts and this Wushu guy was twirling a pair. The additional name to it "分水" (water spreading) is probably due to this weapon being commonly used while swimming (It was commonly used to bore holes beneath ships in combat). The ring's purpose is to prevent the weapon from falling off while in use in the waters. I would assume that in fights on land it would be concealed in the palm when positioned straight, and either cut unaware people with the tip or switch to a grabbing position to go for a stab.

Who is that character using the Emei sting in The Deer and the Cauldron illustration? The fake Empress Dowager. The description is that she was unleashing a series of multi-directional fast attacks on the One-Armed Nun, while the Nun, sitting on the chair, simply warded them off with her finger.

I remember watching the 1980's TVB series Eagle Shooting Heroes/Legend of the Condor Heroes where Huang Rong used the Emei Sting/Thorn to stave off OuYang Feng when she was captured by OuYang Feng.
I think it was after they left Plum Blossom Island and OuYang Feng was forcing her to reveal the contents of the Nine Yin Manual.
