We all know about Yang Guo's sad palms but what is the logic behind sadness? How does ROCH explain being sad as being able to be the instrument of a powerful palm skill? Even the Bu Jing Yun/Cloud character from the Stormriders comic who practices Cloud Spreading Palms has a final move within the palm skill that requires extreme sadness to unleash it. Even in the movie which made some differences from the comic, Xiong Ba(BJY's evil Sifu) said he would show BJY the final move of Cloud Spreading Palm to kill him. And that was when Xiong Ba just saw his daughter die. So the director or script writer didn't just add that part to show off special effects, that part was planned all along . Daughter die, become sad, unleash the final palm move. Of course the artist Ma Wing Shing most likely took inspiration from YG's sad palms.
But back to Jin Yong, the Andy Lau version had YG just switch on the sadness when there was nothing to be sad about. That was in the final episode when he was fighting Golden Wheel King/Jin Lun Fa Wang. Didn't like that scene because in the novel YG was afraid to be separated from XLN again and then only could he activate the Sad Palms. Anyway, what do you all think of sadness being a way to elevate palm skills? Is it logical? It is a negative emotion like anger but sadness just makes you don't want to do anything unlike anger which increases adrenaline. I hope I discovered something new to discuss.
