In Legend of the Condor Heroes the Big Dipper Formation is supposed to be a formation in which the Quanzhen members stand in the same position in which the stars are located based on the Big Dipper constellation. It also helps the participants fend off an enemy of greater skill. Can somebody explain how it all works? E.g how is the team formation based on the Big Dipper used in combat in the novel?

i cannot explain because my knowledge is limited about constellation theory and naming system. but there are a few versions of big dipper formation in novel, at least 4. the standard one is when 7 quanzhen masters gathered together, one time when fighting mei chaofeng, they even sat and cmiiw didnt use sword

In fighting Jin Yong uses vague descriptions with characteristics of the stars of the Big Dipper to describe what's going on.
For instance, JY puts Qiu Chuji, who is the best in martial arts, on the Megrez star since it links the "handle" and the "bowl" of the Big Dipper, thus making it the key of the formation. Wang Chuyi, being the 2nd powerful, is located on Alioth, which is the main star of the "handle".
There is this other description where JY mentions Qiu and Wang blocking and the other stars on their sides to attack.
Everything else is up to imagination.
