Recently I've been watching the Korean drama "Moving". Friends recommending it have been mentioning that the artist/author of the original webcomic is a fan of Jin Yong and the series itself is in spirit a wuxia novel with modern superpower characters. Unfortunately probably due to me being dull I could only feel a small bit of wuxia in it, however, (so far) in two scenes I've spotted one of the main characters reading the Korean versions of Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain and the Condor Trilogy (which is under the title of "英雄門" for....reasons). These were published in the 90s I think, it seems that each series within the Trilogy has their own same cover. My guess from left to right: LOCH, ROCH, HSDS My guess (as good as yours) of the characters from left to right: Wang Chongyang, Xiaolongnu, Zhang Wuji? I like the part where XLN seems to be doing a "losing patience" gaze

I saw John Minford translating Qiu Chuji as Juventus the Abbe and I went 😖. Quanzhen Sect must like Italian football a lot. I was trying to guess what brought John Minford to translate Qiu Chuji as Juventus the Abbe. So I did some research (just Googled actually ) and it seems Juventus means "Youth" in Latin and I presume it means the same in Italian. In French, Abbe means an Abbot. I suppose since Qiu Chuji is also known as Chang Chun Zi 长春子 - directly translated as Ever Spring, Youth/Juventus does seem to fit. I would not be surprised if John Minford was inspired by Italian Football to translate Qiu Chuji's name as Juventus the Abbe.

I wonder how the Korean Dramas are translating the names of Jin Yong's characters.

I wonder how the Korean Dramas are translating the names of Jin Yong's characters. 😁 The question has always been whether to transliterate or translate the names. And I can tell you it's almost certain Minford's decision was influenced by David Hawkes, his father-in-law and the renowned Sinologist who co-translated with him Hong lou meng. In Hong lou meng, the Taoist and Buddhist characters are given Latin names, the actresses French names, and maids and servants English translated names (Aroma for 襲人). The masters and mistresses of the house have their names transliterated though (Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, Wang Xifeng etc.) It works for that novel. I don't know why this strategy doesn't work here. Maybe it's because Hong Lou meng has a large cast of characters. Another thing is them using Christian terms to represent Taoist and Buddhist concepts (like "church of... ", Abbe) which sounds jarring. And I'm quite sure Hawkes has a hand in Minford's abridged translation of The Deer and the Cauldron too. Koreans are in the Sinophile sphere of influence and their names mostly from Hanja, so I won't worry about that too much. The Koreans probably will find a more sensible solution to this problem.

I took a look at the Korean LOCH page on wiki and partially extracted the description for Qiu Chuji: 구처기(丘處機): 별호는 장춘진인 또는 장춘자라고 불린다. 제 3대 전진교주. 중신통 왕중양의 제자. 전진칠자 중 셋째. gucheogi(gucheogi): byeolhoneun jangchunjin-in ttoneun jangchunjalago bullinda. je 3dae jeonjingyoju. jungsintong wangjung-yang-ui jeja. If one is familiar with the content and Chinese most of it could be deciphered

The third generation of progressive religious leaders. The disciple of Wang Chongyang, the god of all gods. The third of the seven. LOL

this is precious anyway.... I read the first chapter: The mighty Qiantang River swept past Ox Village, flowing eastwards without rest, to join the sea some hundred miles south of that still mightier river, the Yangtze.... I read this novel in Bahasa Indoneseia, and because of the Hokkien translation, I failed to recognize that the Ox Village is located near Qiantang!! Qiantang, located in Haining - Jin Yong's hometown
