Yep the novel is indeed set in the Qing Dynasty, the ATV version in 1984 changed the time setting for some reason. This novel takes place many years after the Mount Heaven Saga, and is in fact kind of part of the Mount Heaven Saga. Tang Xiao Lan is the current leader of Mount Heaven, but TVB altered and changed the storyline here. In fact a lot of characters are missing. Princess Bing Chuan, Tang Jing Tian, twins Feng Ling/Feng Ying, Chen Tian Yu and his wife are all missing here. The ending is also changed a bit as Li Sheng Nan and Tang Xiao Lan's duel never happens. After practicing Qiao Bei Ming's skills Li Sheng Nan is supposed to go up to Mount Heaven and duel with Tang Xiao Lan to fulfill the latter's wish. Qiao Bei Ming was Zhang Dan Feng's nemesis and his wish was for whomever to practice his skills to go up to Mount Heaven and defeat Zhang Dan Feng's successor. TVB did change a lot of details here, but the ending with Li Sheng Nan dying still happens.

i just watched this, i think this drama is decent as long as we dont care about the deviation from novel. even though I don't read the novel, but I believe there is no such thing as Jin Shiyi becomes the 38th chief of beggar sect, and learned dog-beating staff. am I correct?
