What if Xiao Feng do not commit suicide ?
Do he know that by the time he commit suicide ,The Liao dynasty are in decline during Yelu Hongji rule while the Jurchen tribe under Wanyan Aguda was on rising ,why he still chose to commit suicide ?
Why not he help his people Khitan against the rising of Wanyan Aguda and serve as peacemaker between Liao and Sung?
After he commit suicide ,the Liao was conquer by Jurchen and Yelu Dashi have forced to escape to central Asia and Wanyan Aguda founded Jin dynasty and later capture Beijing from Sung .
And if he not commit suicide perhaps he can guide Ah chi back to right path and he can advise Liao and Sung emperor united together against Jurchen tribe?
Even if Yelu Hongji attack Sung ,his army are on losing side since the Liao during his rule are getting weaker, agree ?
What do you think?
Thanks.

tragic as XF's suicide is, i've always felt it was the only possible outcome of his story (from his perspective). first of all, he couldn't've known the events that were to follow, historically. and if he hadn't committed suicide, he would have died an outcast, a bitter old man. because he would have refused to help the liao fight the song when it mattered; and yet, if he fought against the liao, then he'd be betraying his own people. a rock and a hard place. his reputation in jianghu was completely destroyed, so there was no hope going back. he could only live in exile, waste his life away. and he would've driven himself mad with guilt and helpless and anger, and that would've driven him insane. it would be a much more ignoble end than the suicide.
my two-cents.

A good thought. Totally agree with Siuyiu!
If I'm not mistaken, after XF died, Song made a peace agreement with Jin and they work together to conquer Liao. Will try to find the historical information about this. But during XF time, Jin was not a thread at all both for Liao and Song.

If we use the Dali kingdom as historical reference, Duan Zhengchun 段正淳 r.1096-1108. And Duan Yu 段和譽 reigned in 1108-1147. Which means XF died around year 1108.
historical note : The Khitan, Western Xia and Song China, during the remainder of 11th century and the early years of the twelfth century, were frequently at war with each other till the Jurchens came along. The Jurchens, ancestors of the later Manchu, would defeat the Khitans in a seven-year war (AD 1115-1122) by means of an alliance with Northern Song. And only in AD 114 that the Jurchen overran the Khitan territories.
So I guess XF wouldn't have imagined that the Jurchen could overpower Liao during that time.
