yenchin, kidd, anyone: does such a character exist? my impression is that LYS's characters, especially his protagonists, are nearly perfect and superhuman.

I don't know about most flawed. But, I certainly find Li Yi from 'The Legend of the Eccentric Heroes of the Female Emperor' (女帝奇英傳) very narrow-minded.

Sorry Siuyiu. I don't remember the details much since I read the novel quite long ago and didn't finish it. I remember Li Yi was quite a conservative guy who is against a woman being emperor. So, he was very much against Wu Zetian. Maybe Andrea or Yenchin can give you more detail. He certainly isn't superhuman because in terms of martial art (武), he cannot match up to Wu Xuanshuang, in terms of literature (文), he cannot match up to Shanggang Wan-er. I found an interesting write up of Li Yi and his relationship with the 3 main female character. It shed some light into the personality of Li Yi. ctc.2windao.com:8888/sysfiles/5/6/20111010162744/e5_6_20111010162744_zm2301.html

Li Yi was a kind of conservative old fashion guy. He kinda liked Shanggoan Wan Er dan Wu Xuanshuang. but he ended up married with another girl. His wive was a jealous insecure wife who later died while clutching his hand. Wu Xuanshuang, niece of Wu Zetian was a smart open minded girl. She tried to convince Li Yi who against Wu Zetian just because she was a woman. Actually deep inside his heart Li Yi kinda knew that Wu Zetian was not as bad as he thought. But again, he's a male and he's from the Li family. He felt like supporting Wu Zetian was a betrayal.
He's indecisive, old fashion, and just like caiyi said : in terms of martial art (武), he cannot match up to Wu Xuanshuang, in terms of literature (文), he cannot match up to Shanggang Wan-er.
He's a kind of guy who in real life I would like to knock his head!

Hi siuyiu. I'm still wondering. Why do you feel LYS's protagonists are perfect? I've not read a complete book of LYS's novel, but, from the adaptations and from commentary I read, I didn't get the idea that LYS's main characters are perfect.
For example, the popular character Li Sheng Nan from 'Jade Bow Connection' 雲海玉弓緣. She has her own obstinacy about certain things.
