haha, a favourite topic of discussion from both WM and WSv1. here are some of the things i managed to salvage. please do continue the discussion!
some differences between JY's and GL's writing:
(me)
- GL women are mostly sluts; JY women are usually more proper & traditional
- having a variety of martial skills (and from different schools) seems to be the better way of being a top fighter in JY vs. a very specialized technique in GL
- the fight scenes are longer in JY
- GL swordsmen tend to be cold, ruthless, anti-social weirdos; JY ones are more friendly and don't go to such lengths of denying themselves the pleasures in life to practice their skills
- GL plots tend to be weirder with unexpected/illogical twists
- GL tends to introduce a lot of characters that disappear into thin air; JY is better at tying-up loose ends in terms of character storylines
- historical periods are slightly better defined in JY than GL
(china-man)
- GL novels are shorter and harder to put down because they're very addicting.
(dimsum)
- the problem with GL novels is that once you read them, you won't read it again because you know the story already. this is the weakness of a mystery type of stories by GL.
(dingdangdong)
- Gu Long never told us how his heroes gained their martial arts and they are always the best, the fastest, the strongest, the most powerful, etc. Jin Yong always told us the details in all his heroes' martial arts.
(whsie)
- JY's characters are 3-D while GL's are 2-D.
- JY's martial arts are more detailed (for more discussion)
- GL's have better plots
- JY's relate to their historical period, making it more realistic
- Usually, JY's character have their martial arts background explained or told (Xiao Feng is the one of the exceptions) while GL's character start the story out strong.
- JY's story usually last more generations.
- JY's story usually have more "lucky" encouters(Xiao Feng is once again an exception).
- GL's stories have more rated R scenes.
- GL relies on dialogue while JY is more description/imagery.
(yufeng)
- JY writes very creative wugong skills and can create any wugong skills with ease. That is JY best plus^^
- JY stories always have a happy ending too and that is very good plus to me.
- Storywise, although yes GL plots can be weird but GL can writes better than JY. So i always prefer GL novels. But alas, GL dont want to write happy endings for all his novels cos he is a true writer and aims to be differ from book to book>.<
- What i feel is that gulong novels are more realistic. Although some of u may disagree that GL writes better by saying JY can write Poems and graduates from a university, that means literature wise, JY is better. I disagree cos GL knows how to write calligraphy and history too. And writing and creative writing cannot be taught.
- JY writes according to historical background while Gulong rarely.
- 18zhang and 9yin appears in many JY novels , just like Gulong's Xichua Tang Sect (anqi and poison) and Liang Yusheng Tian Shan Sect.
- JY novels always have a boring starting that is often not related to the main cast. Cant say Gulong do it better but at least more often to the point (GL wrote 70 novels @@ from lucky guys, sad stories, happy stories, too countless to name)
- JY main casts always get better and better often learn new skills and can fight off their attackers. GL early heroes always lose and when they learn new skills, they will meet more powerful enemies^^; Only later GL heroes like Chu Liuxuang do not have the Training Ladder Procedures and what they wouldnt win, they try to win by wit.
- Jy villians sometimes are likable like Yang kang, JinglunFawang but Gulong villians are so evil, wish they will die.
- JY heroes can prolly wins a large number of people with confidence as long as their wugong is superior enough. GL heroes are scared of human wave tactics which will exhaust them and will kill them. More human than JY.
- JY qinggong level is more realistic than gulong cos gulong fighters can sometimes seem to fly away^^; But later style was changed, so no more flying.
- Jy heroes are more likeable but GL heroines are much better.
To sum it off
Jy Heroes *****
GL Heroes ****
JY Heroine *** (***** for Xln)
GL Heroine ***** (*** if they got bad ending:P)
JY Wugong *****
GL Wugong early stage ***
GL Wugong later stage ***** (I rate it 5 stars cos it so realistic although there is no wugong names)
Jy Plots ****
GL Plots ***** (sometimes it can be even 6 stars @_@)
JY Wugong creativeness *****
GL Wugong creativess ***
JY Overall ****
Why: It feels good to read JY novels.
GL Overall *****
Why: Most are very interesting to read and i repeatly read some of the gulong novels cos of the interesting dialogue and plots.
Temujin wrote: Well.. not really! a lot of fighters in GL novels don't use swords, maybe other weapons, .... still.. there are many bare handed fighters too.
The thing is I think, a lot of more popular GL novels features swordsmen or weapon wielding fighters, like Ximen Chuixue, Ye GuCheng, Ding Peng, Xie Xiaofeng, Yan 13, Li Xunhuan, Ah Fei, Ye Kai, Fu Hongxue, Fang Baoyu, etc
Some of non-weapon wielding fighters that I can think of :
Lu Xiao Feng
Yu Pei Yu
Dongguo Xiansheng
The Parrot
Xiao Yu'er
Shen Lang
Yaoyue Gongzhu
Ji BeiQing
Zhu Yun
Xiao Shiyi Lang
Tian ChiXing
Lian Xin Gongzhu
Feng Shan
Chu Liu Xiang
Temujin wrote: Well it's true that he used saber, but for for the most part of the novel he relies on his bare-hand, did he not ? i read it a while back, so remind me if i make mistake.
Just like Guo Jing relies on XL18Z but he also knows how to use sword, Ren Woxing knows sword art but more famous for his Xixingdafa, Murong fu uses sword but better known for his star shifting techniques.
And for GL heroes, a good example is Hua WuQe, he uses bare-hand for the most part of the novel, but he also knows sword skills.
