It's a historical novel written by Sun Haohui. It takes 15 years for him to write this novel.
The novel started from Duke Xiao - who employed Shang Yang (known for his book The Book of Lord Shang), a legalism philosopher who proposed reformation for Qin. The law reformation changed Qin which was the poorest and the weakest among the other states into a strong state. The story continues to Duke Xiao's son King Huiwen, King Zhaoxiang, Lord Anguo (who ruled for only three days), King Zhuangxiang, and King Zheng - who later unified the whole land and changed his king title into Qin Shihuangdi.
It's a long book, consist of more than 5 millions Chinese characters.
The author is a professor of law, and he was very serious in doing historical research and archaeological finding research. He said in an interview the reason why he wrote this historical novel, because he thought that without Qin, then probably the history would never be the same. For centuries people only condemn Qin Shihuang and Qin as a cruel tyrant government. But the modern archaeological finding showed that actually Qin was not awful as what the ancient historian wrote about them. The bamboo slips and silk scrolls from that era showed that actually Qin law was pretty much advance - such as they gave protection to women from domestic violence, etc. And the wrong interpretation of Record of Grand Historian by Sima Qian - when he wrote about Qin Shihuang ordered the killing of Confucian scholars by burying them alive. Recent finding showed that actually, it was the people who lied to Qin Shihuang about immortality elixirs, and after they spent a lot of money for this elixirs that made him enraged and ordered them to be buried alive. Indeed it was true that many of those people were Confucian scholars, but the real main target was not Confucian scholars itself. But then...most of all historical account about Qin and Qin Shihuang were written by Confucian scholars. They had all the motives to demonize Qin and Qin Shihuang.
The author - who is a professor of law in the book emphasize on how Qin managed to transform from a small poor, and the weakest state became the most powerful state in 100 years because they applied the law reformation in all aspects (from feudalism and hereditary status into meritocracy, agriculture, etc).
It's a really an interesting book. Recommend the book if you could read Chinese.

Did his order to kill his step twin brother who was still a child? @galvatron : I haven't read this novel. I've bought it, but haven't started to read it. The novel used classical Chinese 古文 which is very difficult for me. But I'm watching the tv series which is based on the novel. The first series came up in 2007 (Started with Duke Xiao of Qin), then 2014 (King Huiwen) and 2016 - King Zhaoxiang - the great grandfather of Qin Shihuang. He's the one who kinda 'opened up the path" for Qin Shihuang to conquer the other states. The last installment, which is the story of Qin Shihuang's grandfather (who only became a king for three days), and his father (King Zhuangxiang - reigned for three years), Lv Buwei, his mother and Qin Shihuang himself, should be on air in 2019. I've seen the trailer and it's really epic. I'm really looking fwd for it. As far as I have noticed, the story from the tv series (although I haven't read this book DQDG) is pretty much loyal to 史记 / Records of the Grand Historian. To answer your question: * Lee Hao Lan? ---> In 史记 / Records of the Grand Historian Qin Shihuang's mother's name is Zhao Ji. * Did his mother have love affair with Lui Bui Wei And Lao Ai? ---> Yes. 史记 / Records of the Grand Historian clearly mentioned so. I guess the book DQDG will also follow Shi Ji. His mother was such a wanton woman. After King Zheng enthroned, Lv Buwei started to avoid Zhao Ji to avoid some mess. But then Zhao Ji heard of this Lao Ai- which was said to have a giant male 'thing', and she desired him. It was Lv Buwei who 'arranged' Lao Ai to be sent to Zhao Ji as an imposter eunuch.Lv Buwei bribed the guy who was supposed to castrate him. Therefore Lv Buwei also fell after Lao Ai's failed coup d'etat. * Did Lui Bui Wei control him during his younger day? ---> 史记 / Records of the Grand Historian didn't really clearly state this, but it implied that way. because during that time, they have the tradition of 加冠 - which is a coming of age ceremony. In which for man, it would be 20 years old. And before 20 years old, King Zheng of Qin (his title before he became an emperor) all the court decision was decided by the regent (Lv Buwei) which was also the Prime Minister. Even his mother had to attend the court hearing. Although during the court meeting, the king might have some opinion, but if the regent and the other ministers opposed it, then the king had to follow what the regent said. * Did his order to kill his step twin brother who was still a child? ---> Yes. 史记 didn't mention it was twin brothers. But there were two boys. And he ordered them to be put in a sack clothed and ordered them to be beaten to death. For this one, I've seen the tv series with the title of Lv Buwei. And in it, King Zheng of Qin depicted as a temperamental person, a smart psycho since he was a boy, threw one of the infant brothers which was put in the sackcloth on the ground by himself.

AdminMy mother is now watching the popular China Drama The Legend of Haolan 皓鑭傳 which stated Hoalan was Qin Shihuang Mother ,have you watch this drama? What the name of the last instalments drama Qin ShiHuang grandfather you mention, can you post the link? This is the summary of I haven't watched that 皓鑭傳 and will never ever watched it. After "A Step into the Past" success, so many un-historical fiction and time travel theme novels (Such as 步步惊心, etc) are written and very popular. So MANY of novels written in these kind of genre and very popular. Therefore recently the Chinese government make a ban of such stories and films which alter or twist the historical account. I've read the summary 皓鑭傳 on the Chinese website and have to say this story is totally not historical at all. Not much account tells the story of Zhao State kings, not to mention the minor unimportant princess like that Princess Ya mentioned in this story. But there's one Princess Ya in Zhao State based on A Step Into The Past. I'm not going to surprise if the author of this story was inspired by A Step into The Past. The TV series 秦时丽人明月心 (Vin Zhang and Dilraba) also about Qin Shihuang. But actually this series was even inspired by a manga. In this story, they made Lv Buwei didn't die, but went to another state and work against Qin, and that Qin Shihuang's most loved woman had a premarital son with Jing Ke (the famous assassin who attempted to kill Qin Shihuang). I really like The Great Qin Empire series because it doesn't change the history at all, it only romanticized it into a more interesting and easy to read. Reading Shiji is brief and not interesting at all.

I am looking forward for the last installment of the series while I'm reading the book. I saw the docos of the making of this series. They used historian and museum consultants to create replicas of Qin soldiers and armours. They spent more than 250 days to do the shooting. The guy who plays as Qin Shihuang looks pretty decent. He's tall and got the imposing aura. The only disturbance is that they casted the guy who was Prince Qian in DQDG 1 as General Li Mu, and the guy who was Pang Juan as General Wang Jian in this series. But apart all that, everything looks good. Hopefully the series would be aired soon!

My mother is now watching the popular China Drama The Legend of Haolan 皓鑭傳 which stated Hoalan was Qin Shihuang Mother ,have you watch this drama? What the name of the last instalments drama Qin ShiHuang grandfather you mention, can you post the link? galvatron prime : I am so bored that I'm watching this Legend of Haolan. LOL. Here is some interesting thing about this series: 1. the plot about Haolan and her half-sister is pretty much like the Princess Weiyoung --> well; the stereotype typical plot in this 'concubine' or harem series/novel. 2. What's interesting about this Haolan is that in the story, Haolan was from a prominent family. But then because of her step mother and half-sister, and also her weak father; she was expelled from her family and she was sold as a slave; and Lv Buwei bought her. ---> Qin Shihuang's mother - Zhao Ji - in the historical record, it's mentioned that she came a prominent family. But then it's pretty weird that if she's from a prominent family, she's a dancer and became Lv Buwei's dancer in his mansion. It's also mentioned that when Qin Shihuang conquered Handan (the capital of Zhao State), he ordered his soldiers to kill all of her mother's enemies by burying them alive. This is very pretty interesting since Qin Shihuang DID NOT order of killing all of the nobles families from the states he conquered. Once the state and the capital were conquered, the citizens were left to continue their lives as long as they didn't make any resistance or attack the Qin soldiers. Handan was the only exception. Only in Handan that Qin Shihuang ordered his soldiers to kill her mother's family enemies and also destroyed some part of the city. Somehow this Legend of Haolan made a good fictional part on how a daughter from a prominent family became a dancer/ little concubine of a merchant. Btw, Handan city is still exist until now. It's located in Hebei province.
