I have a friend whose surname is Zhou 周 and was transliterated as Chew. That is close enough to Ciu/Jiu. Any idea in what dialect Zhou is pronounced Chew/Ciu/Jiu? Thanks. Hokkien dialect (or Minnan for the term used by mainland people). so in my country , people dont know who are zhou botong or zhou zhiruo, they know ciu pek tong or ciu ci jiak Thank you very much for the information. Fujianese is not my dialect. I speak Cantonese and understand Hakka, but I get the Fujian dialect and the ChaoZhou dialect mixed up all the time.

Chaozhou is a dialect of Minnan, the difference being the Chaozhou dialect has a lilting tonal "lift" at the end of sentences. Some minor terms differ as well. Chaozhou and the main Fujian dialect are still mutually intelligible. That's about as much as I know about the two dialects.

It is exactly because these two dialects are similar that I get them mixed up all the time.
