About the treaty that the British made with the Qing dynasty when they occupied Hong Kong, did it specifically say that it was to be returned to 'China' in 1997 or did it say 'Qing dynasty'? To Qing Dynasty.

About the treaty that the British made with the Qing dynasty when they occupied Hong Kong, did it specifically say that it was to be returned to 'China' in 1997 or did it say 'Qing dynasty'? To Qing Dynasty. There were three parts of Hong Kong that the British occupied. The British first acquired Hong Kong Island in perpetuity after the first Opium War in 1842 as per the Nanking Treaty. Kowloon Peninsula was initially leased, then ceded to Britain in perpetuity in 1860 following the Convention of Peking after the second Opium War. There is a road in Kowloon Peninsula called Boundary Street (north of Prince Edward Road and its namesake MTR station) - the South part of this Boundary Street is the extent of the Kowloon Peninsula area acquired by Britain in perpetuity. The area known as the New Territories which is north of the Boundary Street was leased to Britain for 99 years under the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory in 1898. The "return to China/Qing Dynasty" part would only appear in the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory.
