I still remember the 2003 Legend of Condor Heroes which starred Li Yapeng and Zhou Xun. Their voices sound off even though unmistakably those are their own voices. It seems that no matter what the series is,if it is set in modern times, their voices always look like it's from their mouth. But with all ancient series it looks a dub job. Which is strange since they are dubbing using the actor's and actresses' own voice. Why do they do that? At first I thought it was because of some cast accent but I've seen modern series where characters speak different Chinese dialects yet it still looks like it's coming out of their mouth precisely.

At first I thought it was because of some cast accent but I've seen modern series where characters speak different Chinese dialects yet it still looks like it's coming out of their mouth precisely. There are many reasons for that : 1. accent problem or language problem. Some of the actors/ actresses don't speak proper Mandarin, or they speak in a very heavy accent that can't be tolerated. For example : Dilraba, Hawick Lau, etc. They're always dubbed. And oftentimes they use the same dubbers for years; therefore many people unless fans don't even know that the voice in the TV/film are not their own voices. 2. many of the new young actors/ actresses - especially those 'idols', they're just too lazy and too stupid to memorize the scripts. It's no secret that many of them often times just recite "yi er san si wu, yi er san si....etc" . These are the actors/ actresses who only sell their good looks and popularity with zero acting capacity. 3. In some modern series, characters speak different Chinese dialects - but it is mostly intentional. And if it's not intentional, then it proves that the actors/ actresses are willing to recite their lines while the directors, and audiences could accept their accent. 4. It seems that no matter what the series is,if it is set in modern times, their voices always look like it's from their mouth. But with all ancient series it looks a dub job ---> perhaps because the scripts for ancient series are using ancient language, therefore the structure is different from modern language?

Admin . Oh,sorry sorry. I should have been more clear in my questions and descriptions. When I watch the mainland ancient productions of LOCH, ROCH ,DGSD, and Sword Stained With Royal Blood which were pre-2010, all the cast, not some, has voices that don't look like it's coming out from their own mouth. But if you watch Dicky Cheung(HK-Taiwan collab) series like Duke of Mount Deer and Fong Sai Yuk or Richie Ren(HK-Taiwan collab also) series like State of Divinity,Chu Liu Xiang and Condor Lovers, there is a mix between their own voice and dubbed foreign cast voice. In Cantonese version the Cantonese will sound natural but for foreign cast, they will be dubbed Cantonese and in the Mandarin version, vice versa, the same. But in pre-2010 mainland productions, all the voices in ancient drama sound dubbed but in modern mainland drama, no character's voice(not even one) sound dubbed.
