Hello ,i have a question ,why Jinyong don't create any new hero during Yuan dynasty 1271-1368) apart from Zhang Wuji ?
And even Zhang wuji was created at the end of the Yuan Dynasty ? Many important history event happen during Yuan Dynasty like Mongol invasion of Europe ,Middle East , Japan and Jawa ,Marco Polo visit China and Kublai Khan the ,Black Death etc?
I think He can create 3 or more hero during this era to link Yang Guo and Zhang Wu Ji.
Why he don't take the idea from TVB serial Eternal Happiness再生緣?
Why he don't create a hero fighting with the Mongol or against the Mongol?
Why he don't create a brotherhood like DGSD with friendship between Han,Mongol ,Jurchen ,Japanese,Vietnamese ,Indonesian ,European ,Muslim,Jews ,etc?
Mongol empires is the largest land empires in history ,why not he create a world hero tournament like wulin version of Street Fighter Which invited all the fighter in Mongol or Yuan empires to fight for no 1 ,just just for Han ,am i right ?
What do you think?
Thanks.

some really good questions that i don't feel qualified to answer! just some random thoughts as i read them--i do hope others more knowledgeable about chinese history can give some insights!
(1) yuan dynasty only lasted about 90 years--not really a lot of scope for building a backstory (2) how stable was everyday life? if people can barely manage to subsist, even those belonging to wulin, then there's little time for heroics (3) world hero tournament is usually not the focal point of wuxia (unlike kung fu a la fok yuen gap or yip man), so even if the mongol empire created a world stage, the interest wouldn't've been about finding out who's world champion but rather how to depose the mongol foreigners so a han dynasty can be reestablished (which is essentially the political focus of HSDS) (4) the mongols successfully establishing the first non-han dynasty in china was a big enough blow and instigated quite a strong feeling of xenophobia among the han population--a brotherhood between ethnic groups would've been out of the question; those who attempted it would've been persecuted (not just ostracized, as wulin members usually are from "society")

Could it be because Jin Yong is not as well-versed in Yuan Dynasty as he is in Song and Qing Dynasty?
He seems to set most of his fictions in Ming, Qing, and Song Dynasty.

Could it be because Jin Yong is not as well-versed in Yuan Dynasty as he is in Song and Qing Dynasty? He seems to set most of his fictions in Ming, Qing, and Song Dynasty. You have a point there. I know Jin Yong was writing his stories for the newspaper, published daily, so it could be that he did not have sufficient time to do research on other dynasties. But then again, I would presume he has other people to do the research for him. I wonder if Jin Yong created many heroes in the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties in his books. I remember Wei XiaoBao in Duke of Deer Mountain, set in early Qing - era of Emperor Kang Xi. There was Chen JiaLe, I think, in Book and Sword. This book was set in the time of Emperor Qian Long, which was a period after Duke of Deer Mountain. It would seem that Jin Yong was not so much of a fan of cross arcs in his stories, whereby heroes in one story crosses into another story. I think that would be something that Gu Long was wont to do.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but, here are the JY novels I know that are set in Qing Dynasty
Duke of Mount Deer Book & Sword Secret of the Linked Cities The Lovers Sabres
Btw, I'm kinda disappointed that Jin Yong skip to 100 years later for the Condor trilogy. I would like to read more about Guo Polu. He has an interesting name 郭破虜. It literally means 'breaking out of prison'.

I think I watched the Shaw Brothers adaptation of "Linked Cities" though. I cannot remember if they were set in the Qing Dynasty. Jin Yong kind of skipped out on Guo Polu. If I remember correctly, he and Guo Xiang were twins - Huang Rong did not know, ultra sound scans were not available to her at that time - but they were born during a battle at XiangYang City (I think) and Huang Rong were hiding out in a broken dungeon or something to give birth. Hence Guo Polu's name. This was recounted in Return of the Condor Heroes. Jin Yong did cover more on Guo Xiang in the beginning of Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, ending with a note that Guo Xiang formed E'mei sect. He just said that Guo Polu died - and that was more or less all he had on Guo Polu in Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. Jin Yong did not devote much time/space for the twins, Guo Xiang and Guo Polu, in Return of the Condor Heroes. I believe this was partly because at that time, the twins were pretty young. Much more time/space was given to Guo Fu, the spoilt daughter of Huang Rong and Guo Jing. I suppose Jin Yong could have made Guo Jing some sort of hero against the non-Hans, but this would disrupt the flow of Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre.
