Yes, but he sails off with Haydée not Mercedes in the end. Mercedes I think still remains devoted to her husband and son. no, mercedes is disgusted with her husband and she and their son abandon him. Edmund sailed away with Haydee - not with Mercedes. Btw : some sources mentioned that Jin Yong admitted that he got his idea about Lian Cheng Jue from Count of Monte Cristo.

Alright, so this is the letter wrote by Edmond - the ending of the novel : My Dear Maximilian,— ‘There is a felucca for you at anchor. Jacopo will conduct you to Leghorn, where M. Noirtier awaits his granddaughter whom he wishes to bless before you lead her to the altar. Everything that is in this grotto, my friend, my house in the Champs Elysées, and my château at Tréport, are the marriage gifts bestowed by Edmond Dantès upon the son of his old master, Morrel. Mademoiselle de Villefort will share them with you; for I entreat her to give to the poor the immense fortune reverting to her from her father, now a madman, and her brother, who died last September with his mother. Tell the angel who will watch over your future destiny, Morrel, to pray sometimes for a man who, like Satan, thought himself, for an instant, equal to God; but who now acknowledges, with Christian humility, that God alone possesses supreme power and infinite wisdom. Perhaps those prayers may soften the remorse he feels in his heart. As for you, Morrel, this is the secret of my conduct towards you. There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, before we can appreciate the enjoyments of life. ‘Live, then, and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget, that until the day when God deigns to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words,—“Wait and hope.”— Your friend, Edmond Dantès, Count of Monte Cristo.’ ======= So yeah, kyc is right, the theme of the novel is not only about a revenge, but also forgiveness, and also Edmond's ultimate victory - which is not the defeat of his enemies but his spiritual rebirth which enables him to rejoin the human race and sail away in hope with Haydée.

Just realized how Monte Cristo is so loved in Chinese speaking world. There's another series - adapted with some changes and localization of the story - with the tile 传奇之王 in 2011. One of the stars in it is Kenneth Tsang. I accidentally watch this series yesterday...and just the first series, I could tell that the story is the same as Monte Cristo novel. Some changes and localizations are : the setting is in China in 1913..during the turmoil after Republic and after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. BTW, the TVB series I was talking about was The Great Vendetta (大報復), released in 1977 and starring Adam Cheng, Gigi Wong, Angie Chiu, and Damien Lau. Adam Cheng sang the main theme song.

The Count of Monte Cristo seems to have influence far and wide. Jin Yong was said to have been influenced by Alexander Dumas when he wrote A Deadly Secret, (I was told in this forum that) Gu Long's God of Sabre story, when written by a ghostwriter ripped off the The Count of Monte Cristo. And many movies around the world, including a telenovela have been influenced by it. There's usually a story about a wronged individual who ends up in prison, and meets someone with a powerful secret which ends up benefiting the wronged individual. Either that or the wronged individual escapes by himself and exacts revenge. Can you tell me What is Count If Monte Cristo about ,never heard before ? Admin kyc If you can find and wtach the TVB series The Great Vendetta with Adam Cheng, you'll have an idea of the plot of Count of Monte Cristo. I haven't watched it as yet, but when I checked my discs, I saw the similarities. I don't know how faithful do Alexandre Dumas' book the series is.

This is the Shaw Brothers adaptation movie. In one scene(not in trailer) they even show one of the torture techniques on Ding Dian(the prisoner who passed the internal skill to Di Yun) being anally penetrated by a wooden stick-torture chair! Most likely not in the novel.
(Oops. I posted this without considering that the topic of the torture technique has nothing to do with the Monte Cristo story. My bad. )

I don't remember this scene, but I watched the movie only once many years ago. There is also the TVB series called A deadly secret, with Kenneth Tsang, if I'm not mistaken.

The English title is : The King of Legend. Liu Yunlong is the director and the actor. The series was not a big deal when it's aired in 2011. But then it became popular lately because of the series called 风筝 by Liu Yunlong - many people revisit this old series because of this series popularity. I haven't seen the Great Vendetta, for this 传奇之王, actually they adapted the story pretty well and very compatible with the situation at that time. So even for those who are not familiar with Monte Cristo story would still enjoy it. I would say it's 80% loyal to the story.

Thank you! actually I know this lady who made this photoshop works. My painting, wuxiasociety.freeforums.net/thread/1215/swordsman-paintings?page=2 the painting of Ayanga in blue with black horse and eagles is based on her photoshop work Anyway, just last week I saw the Count of Monte Cristo Musical. Gosh...AYG is really awesome. The musical itself is based on Russian musical。 I was not familiar at all with all of the songs. The dancing choreography, and the music are awesome. The lyrics are awesomely translated. AYG is perfect as Edmond. The make up artist also really awesome. He got the young happy Edmond look, and the mysterious look of 43 years old of the Count (in his novel he looked as if he's just 35-36 years old). But the other actors and actresses... to be honest although they sing perfectly, but their faces just don't fit the costume. It's so weird to see Asians with European costumes and hairstyles like that. It's just the same weird feeling I had when I saw Placido Domingo acted as the First Emperor in the opera.
